Framing Moments: Photography from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts

With Essays and Contributions by Philip Brookman, Kalia Brooks Nelson, Belinda Tate, and Deborah Willis, PhD.

Framing Moments: Photography from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts features selections of some of the most impactful images from the nearly 100 works featured in the similarly titled 2021 exhibition.  Offering a distinct and inclusive overview of photography in the United States and beyond, Dr. Willis culled the KIA’s significant photography holdings ranging from the mid-nineteenth century to the present in search of how photographers have the unique ability to preserve moments, people, and places. Like the exhibition, the catalogue juxtaposes a diverse group of photographers who reveal everyday life across rural and urban communities, explore modern photographic aesthetics, document pivotal moments of social change and conflict, and present artists as both celebrities and ordinary people. Framing Moments spans time and history, international and regional with notable works featured by: Ansel Adams and Berenice Abbott to Gordon Parks and James VanDerZee to Barbara Crane and Danny Lyon to Dawoud Bey, Shirin Neshat, Cindy Sherman, and Lorna Simpson, among many others.
