Develop your relief printing skills in this class for beginners to advanced printmakers. Printing carved blocks is one of the oldest, simplest, and most versatile tools for reproducing art. Students will learn the ins and outs of carving and printing linoleum and woodblocks, and benefit from our well-stocked collection of tools and equipment. Discuss your work in a community of like-minded makers. Please bring drawings or reference photos to the first class.
Students with some prior knowledge or experience in Japanese woodblock printmaking will have the opportunity to grow in their skills through this class. Learn more advanced multi-block printing techniques, key-block pasting for better registration, and paper flattening to take your talents to the next level.

Students will create a cohesive series of one-of-a-kind prints by making stencils, drawing, and applying watercolors directly onto vellum plates, then print them onto Japanese and Western papers with the etching press. You'll learn how to build up layers of texture and visual interest by printing multiple plates at once, in addition to blending colors, overlapping stencils, and incorporating collage elements to achieve a range of effects.

Using a polymer-coated plate and a digital positive, you’ll create an intaglio-etched plate for high-quality images approaching those produced using traditional copperplate gravure. This process produces a beautiful photographic gradation of tones.

Do you want to make a large-scale relief print at September’s South Street Print Fest, but don’t know where to start? This workshop will give you the information you need to prepare your woodblock for the event. Topics will include image design, wood and tool choices, and what to expect when your block is printed. Workshop tuition covers registration, fabric, and ink for the Sept 26 event. Tuition is a per person rate, even if you chose to do a collaborative matrix.

This course will also cover the more traditional lithographic media of aluminum plates and stones. Step-by-step instructions will take you through the basics of plate preparation and press operation. Explore the versatile gel printing process to create monotypes. In this class we will experiment with various techniques to build imagery on the gel plate using image transfers, corrugated cardboard, stencils, and a variety of 3D objects that can be used for mark-making. We will create multiple color prints in a single pull. This class is ideal for beginners to advanced printmakers.
Learn to make your own simple frames for paintings, prints, and drawings using accessible materials and methods that can be replicated at home! Some basic woodworking skills will be covered as well as tips and tricks for upcycling thrifted frames.
