Explore cold connections and settings for jewelry and small scale sculpture. Through creative problem solving, students will practice methods for connecting found objects, fragile materials, enameled/surface treated metal, and more. Techniques to be covered will include rivets, tabs, and wire connections using a mixed media approach with metal as our base material. No previous experience is required, all skill levels are welcome.
During this fun-filled hammering class you will start with the basic fold forming techniques and then will move on to more involved folds and hammering. Foldforming is a metalsmithing technique where metal is folded in various ways, then hammered to stretch certain parts of the fold resulting in a wonderful organic hammered copper shape. All levels of experience are welcome. Independent studio time is available for the duration of the class. Some materials are provided, with additional materials available for purchase.

This multi-department course involves the design, shaping, and finishing of a functional and artistic utensil. The process begins with selecting the appropriate material—such as metal sheet and metal rod. The material is then cut or forged into a rough spoon shape. We will learn techniques to forge the handle, cut the form, file and cup the spoon shape in the Sculpture department. The second half of the semester will take place in the jewelry department where students will define the details of the spoon through processes such as reviting, polishing and soldering.
