BOTANICAL CYANOTYPES WITH ENCAUSTICS

Combine two historic processes–the 19th-century photo process of cyanotype and the ancient craft of beeswax and resin of encaustic–to make a one-of-a-kind, work of art. Arrange grasses, ferns, or flowers to be placed on hand-coated watercolor paper and exposed in the sun. Dried prints will be prepped and worked on in the encaustic studio, layering wax, and hand-coloring to create a dimensional dreamlike image.

CREATIVE FLOWER PHOTOGRAPHY

CAMERA BASICS: MOVING PAST AUTO MODE

Taking your camera out of auto can be intimidating but full freedom from that mode is achievable. This technical course takes you through your camera's manual and teaches you the fundamentals of how ISO, shutter speed, and F-stop work together for understandable, predictable, and repeatable results. Participants need to provide their own cameras that have user controls for shutter speed and lens opening. Please bring your owner’s manual to the first class.

HANDMADE PHOTO BOOK

Select, edit, print, and bind your photos into a handmade book while viewing and handling a selection of artist-made books to serve as inspiration for your own. The first day will be devoted to the editing, sequencing, and printing of images. The following session will be committed to folding, stitching, and binding into a hardcover book. Instructors will email instructions to enrollees for images to be used.

CYANOTYPE ON FABRIC

The process of cyanotype, an analogue photo process that results in a beautiful blue image. You will learn to prepare fabric for best results and hand coat the prepared fabric with the light sensitive cyanotype chemistry. The objects, botanicals, and drawings you bring will culminate in your one-of-a-kind pieces of sun-printed fabric that could be used in a quilt, patch or other fabric project.
