Come learn the basics of painting with acrylics. This course will cover concepts such as composition and color mixing as well as what tools are available and how to use them. Learn how to stretch and prepare a canvas, use acrylic mediums, and how to give your work good bones by starting off with an underpainting. No painting experience necessary. In this class, students will create an original oil painting from start to finish. Through a guided process, students will learn to prime, compose, paint, glaze, varnish, and leave the class with the basic skills needed to paint at home! This class is aimed at both experienced and novice painters who are interested in developing a “looser” approach to their work. Classes will cover a range of subject matter using many of the basic techniques with an emphasis on creating work that is inspired by Edward Wesson, Edward Seago, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and early Andrew Wyeth to name but a few; all noted practitioners of this style.
Learn the basics of this classic technique that dates back to antiquity and was a primary painting medium prior to the Renaissance. This class will introduce you to traditional methods of underpainting, including preparing and layering paint to achieve luminous results. Pigments, gesso panels, and eggs are provided.

In this class, participants will examine the intersection of painting and sculpture. Using a pre-stretched canvas, students will first explore ways to physically manipulate, attach objects, and treat the surface of the canvas, thereby turning the ground itself into an object. Once dimensionally developed, students will then learn the best way to seal the ground with gesso before embellishing it with acrylic paints. This is a great workshop to help you push past any creative blocks and explore painting construction and form, rather than simply applying paint to a flat surface.
