Explore your response to works of art from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts' collection. Join accomplished poet and instructor Elizabeth Kerlikowske to practice describing and interpreting artworks using poetry and prose. Class will consist of brief lectures, gazing at artwork in the KIA’s revolving exhibitions and permanent collection, writing, and group discussion. Expect to learn more about yourself, writing, and art!
WRITING MEMOIR

Create a literary memoir that reflects memories and experiences through the examination of work by great contemporary artists and direct feedback from fellow writers. Consider form, tone, strategies, and other tools to enrich personal storytelling in the written word. Participants should be ready to share their work with others and respond in mind with thoughtful preparation. The instructor will provide reading materials as handouts.

WRITING FICTION

Write flash fiction, also known as micro fiction or short-short stories, in a workshop style setting. Become increasingly familiar with terms and concepts used to discuss fiction as you learn what makes stories work, and develop your craft. Generate your own collection of flash fiction through peer review and weekly exercises.
WRITING POETRY

Discover how language and imagination come together to create the literary arts. Read, write, and discuss contemporary poetry, and a little prose, in a range of styles. Classes will be conducted in a workshop setting with the primary focus of the class being discussion of one another’s writing. Additional activities may include in-class writing exercises.

Come ready to jump start comprehension and production skills in conversational ASL through practice and use of the targeted linguistic structures. U.S. deaf culture and history will also be covered.
