SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Wonder of China: Blue and White Porcelain
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of “Blue and White Porcelain\,” an episode from the documentary series Wonder of China. Learn more about the history of the iconic blue-on-white ceramic style that has been admired\, collected\, and copied for centuries. Follow artists Lu Lyujun\, Ye Jianxin\, and Liao Zhidan as they demonstrate their own approaches to this art form\, drawing from both centuries-old traditional methods and contemporary innovations. The episode concludes with a consideration of the classic art form in unconventional artistic settings\, such as architectural design and fashion. \nThe Wonder of China series was produced by the China Broad View Cultural Communication Center in Beijing. This episode runs for 30 minutes and is captioned in English. Following the screening\, stop by the Joy Light Gallery to view the blue and white porcelain pieces featured in the exhibition Kyungmi Shin: A Story to Finding Us. Selected by Shin\, these works from the KIA’s permanent collection are thoughtfully displayed in conversation with her own collaged paintings and ceramics.

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: A Conversation with Jessica Silverman
DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of the 2024 West Michigan Area Show’s opening on May 3\, juror Jessica Silverman sits down for a conversation with Rehema Barber\, the KIA’s Director of Curatorial Affairs. Drawing on perspectives honed from many years working in curatorial positions in both the commercial and non-profit art sectors\, Silverman and Barber will discuss the challenges that artists face while forging careers in the field today\, as well as opportunities and strategies for future growth. Attendees are welcome and encouraged to ask questions and share their own perspectives. \nGuest juror Jessica Silverman holds a BFA from Otis College and an MA in Curatorial Practices from the California College of the Arts. Her eponymous San Francisco gallery was founded in 2008 and represents artists who make museum-worthy art at all stages of their careers. Works from the gallery have found homes in prominent museums across the US and abroad. \nThis event is free to attend\, but preregistration is encouraged!

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: Mythology and History
DESCRIPTION:During this ARTful Evening talk\, learn more from the artist whose captivating works are featured in the Joy Light Gallery exhibition Kyungmi Shin: A Story to Finding Us. Los Angeles-based artist Kyungmi Shin (b. 1963\, Busan\, South Korea) works in the fields of painting\, sculpture\, and photography. Using her own family archive and painting historical and cultural narratives in juxtaposition\, she places marginalized bodies at the center of her work\, creating artworks that shift the gaze from dominant narratives to immigrant\, creolized\, and complex stories.  \nShin received her MFA from UC Berkeley in 1995. Her works have been exhibited at the J. Paul Getty Museum\, the Berkeley Art Museum\, the Sonje Art Museum\, the Japanese American National Art Museum\, and the Torrance Art Museum. She has received numerous grants\, including the California Community Foundation Grant\, the Durfee Grant\, the Pasadena City Individual Artist Fellowship\, and the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Artist in Residence Grant. Her artwork is included in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum\, LACMA\, and BAMPFA.
