DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, Prof. Ginger Owen-Murakami will discuss one of the most influential documentary photographs ever created. Produced by Dorothea Lange during the Great Depression as part of Roy Stryker’s Farm Security Administration (FSA) photography project\, Migrant Mother remains in the public domain of the United States Library of Congress. As one of the most widely reproduced images in American history\, this photograph endures as a profound symbol of hardship\, resilience\, and collective memory\, embodying the struggles and perseverance that shaped the American experience. \nGinger Owen-Murakami is a Professor of Photography at Western Michigan University’s Gwen Frostic School of Art. She teaches a variety of classes in Fine Art Studies (History\, Professional Practices\, Traditional Darkroom\, Digital & Alternative Processes). Owen-Murakami’s artwork derives imagery from narratives and themes of family history\, race\, gender\, and culture. She has lectured\, worked\, and exhibited internationally.

DESCRIPTION:Meet internationally-renowned conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas! During this special program\, Thomas will share reflections on his work\, which revolves primarily around themes of perspective\, identity\, commodity\, media\, and culture. Thomas’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad and recognized with many prestigious awards and fellowships. He is the creator of such powerful public artworks as The Embrace (Boston\, 2022)\, Unity (Brooklyn\, 2019)\, and Love Over Rules (San Francisco\, 2017). His collaborative projects include Question Bridge: Black Males\, In Search Of The Truth (The Truth Booth)\, The Writing on the Wall\, and For Freedoms. \nThomas holds a B.F.A. from New York University and an M.A./M.F.A. from the California College of the Arts\, San Francisco. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: "Kalamazoo...and how it grew!": A Model American City Tours Europe at Mid-Century
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1950s\, Upjohn Pharmaceuticals partnered with the United States Information Agency to develop an exhibition on Kalamazoo that toured several major European cities. “Kalamazoo…and how it grew!” was designed by Will Burtin in conjunction with Jack Masey of the United States Information Agency\, with the bill for the exhibition footed by Upjohn Pharmaceuticals. In this talk\, we will trace the exhibition’s development and scope\, as well as discuss how the exhibition fit into the USIA’s broader goals of deploying design in the promotion of democracy abroad. \nChristine Young-Kyung Hahn is a lifelong Midwesterner\, born in Detroit\, raised in Lansing\, and a professor of art history at Kalamazoo College since 2008. She is a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield\, MN\, and received her M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. While rooted in the Midwest\, her research questions have taken her around the world\, digging through archives in Paris\, New York\, and Seoul. To support these endeavors\, Dr. Hahn has worked on exhibitions for the Art Institute of Chicago\, for the books division at the University of Chicago Press\, and for higher education development at the University of Michigan Law School. Her work on modern Korean artists and exhibitions has been supported by the Fulbright and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:John James Audubon: Entrepreneur\, Naturalist\, Patriot\, Fraud
DESCRIPTION:During this talk\, Dr. James Denison will examine John James Audubon’s multinational background\, transatlantic audience\, and the nationalist ambitions behind his celebrated publication\, The Birds of America. While Audubon’s book is now synonymous with naturalism in America\, it was made with the intention of constructing particular ideas about place\, identity\, and nationhood in order to appeal to customers on both sides of the Atlantic. The result was a book as beautiful as it was expensive and evocative\, yet also one that often cut corners\, misrepresenting\, fabricating\, and plagiarizing in the name of commercial success. \nPlease note that this program will comprise a prerecorded lecture by Dr. Denison screened in the auditorium\, followed by a lightly guided gallery exploration. \nJames Denison recently concluded his term as the Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow for the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History at Kalamazoo College\, a joint position held since 2023. A native of Washington\, D.C.\, he earned his Ph.D. in Art History at the University of Michigan\, where he completed his dissertation on the Stieglitz Circle and racism in the interwar US. He has published scholarship in the journals Word & Image\, Panorama\, CAA.Reviews\, and Art Journal. While at the KIA\, he worked on multiple exhibitions and wrote for two catalogues: 101 Legendary Selections from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and Art\, Music & Feminism in the 1950s.

SUMMARY:Artists' Exchange: Indigenous Voices and the Future of American Art
DESCRIPTION:During this special program\, three contemporary Indigenous artists from across the country will come together to discuss their artistic approaches\, points of inspiration\, and visions for the future. Speakers include Dakota Mace (Diné)\, Cara Romero (Chemehuevi)\, Kelly Church (Pottawatomi/Ottawa/Ojibwe). Mace’s work focuses on translating the language of Diné history and beliefs while pushing the viewer’s understanding of Diné culture through alternative photography techniques\, weaving\, beadwork\, and papermaking. Photographer Cara Romero uses contemporary techniques to depict the modernity of Native peoples\, illuminating Indigenous worldviews and aspects of supernaturalism in everyday life. Kelly Church is a black ash basket maker\, a fiber artist\, and a strong advocate for the survival of Native traditions through her work in educating the public about the endangered black ash tree. \nMace’s multimedia piece Tsin Bigaan (Branches) and Romero’s photographic print Arla Lucia are on view in the exhibition For the People\, By the People: America at 250\, and Church’s woven black ash piece Every Dawn is a New Day is on view in our permanent collection exhibition. \nGalleries open at 11am\, and admission is included with the price of program attendance. \nTicket Prices:\nKIA Members – $20\nNon-members – $25\nCollege students – $10

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Remembering World War II in Japanese Voices
DESCRIPTION:Sociolinguist Noriko Sugimori has often worked with her students to collect oral histories from Japanese-speaking World War II survivors in Japan\, South Korea\, and the United States. Their testimonies reveal personal experiences that have often remained untold and show how the past continues to shape the present. Drawing on video excerpts from these interviews\, Dr. Sugimori will explore the stories\, silences\, and meanings preserved in wartime memory. \nDr. Sugimori is Professor of Japanese at Kalamazoo College. Her Mellon Foundation-funded Japanese-English oral history project was the first in using the bilingual Oral History Metadata Synchronizer. At Kalamazoo College\, she teaches the Japanese language at all levels\, as well as sociolinguistics.

DESCRIPTION:Jimmy Mirikitani (1920-2012) was a Japanese American artist who survived the trauma of WWII incarceration\, the loss of family and friends in his ancestral city of Hiroshima\, a harsh life on the streets of New York\, and the chaos of 9/11—all by making art. Sitting alone on a windy corner in Soho\, he drew whimsical cats\, bleak concentration camps\, and the angry red flames of the atomic bomb. Blending beauty and humor with tragedy and loss\, The Cats of Mirikitani is an intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of war and the healing power of art. \nThis film was directed and produced by Linda Hattendorf\, who has worked in the New York documentary community for decades. Her editing work has aired on PBS\, A&E\, and The Sundance Channel\, as well as in theatrical venues and hundreds of festivals. Produced in 2006\, The Cats of Mirikitani was her directorial debut and won awards at more than thirty film festivals around the world. The film has a run time of 74 minutes.

Celebrate the return of this beloved part of the KIA’s permanent collection with a screening of The Eye is the First Circle. Inspired by Mary Gabriel’s bestseller Ninth Street Women\, this 2022 documentary centers the work of Frankenthaler and her female contemporaries — Grace Hartigan\, Elaine de Kooning\, Joan Mitchell\, and Lee Krasner — who broke new ground in the field of Abstract Expressionism despite the marginalization they faced in mid-20th century America. The Eye is the First Circle was created by Schler Productions in partnership with PBS12 (Denver)\, and has a run time of 56 minutes.

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: Intergenerational Impacts of the Japanese American Wartime Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of Pearl Harbor and the United States’ declaration of war on Japan\, the U.S. government ordered the removal of more than 120\,000 men\, women\, and children from their homes based on their Japanese ancestry and imprisoned them in remote incarceration camps. Two-thirds were U.S. citizens. In this talk\, Dr. Donna Nagata will examine how the lasting consequences of this wartime trauma continue to shape experiences of postwar third- and fourth-generation Japanese Americans. \nDonna Nagata\, Ph.D.\, is Professor of Psychology in the Clinical Science Area at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. She has studied the psychosocial effects of the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans for over three decades\, with a particular focus on postwar multigenerational impacts.
