SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Tejer
DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of Wellspring’s annual RADFest\, hear from this year’s RADicle Resident! Puerto Rican movement artist Lourdes del Mar Santiago Lebrón will discuss their new work\, Tejer\, inspired by the process of weaving. They observe\, “Tejido (weaving) relies on pattern making and repetition; the practice\, much like dance\, requires patience\, consistency\, and practice. The ephemerality of dance experiences can be exemplified by tejido\, as loop stitches are never perfect and can be similar but never exactly the same.” Their work explores the ways their ancestors have actively connected them to land through patterns of repetitive\, consistent care\, and how these patterns exist\, merge\, and change within them as a part of an ongoing lineage.  \nLourdes del Mar aims to create artistic explorations that heighten the senses\, provoke inquisition\, and demand attention. As a Queer Latine woman\, they are committed to making art that is unapologetic\, ideally aiding to create a world in which people think longer\, feel harder\, and experience life without hesitation. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University\, they are currently pursuing their MFA at Washington University in St. Louis. \nThe RADicle Residency is a collaborative nature-based residency between Wellspring/Cori Terry and Dancers’ RADFest program and The Croft of Horton Bay\, MI.

SUMMARY:Richard Phillips: Strokes of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Detroit artist Richard Phillips started painting while in prison with a mail order watercolor set: landscapes\, portraits of famous people\, jazz musicians\, and more\, eventually creating over 400 paintings. \nArrested in 1971 for a murder he didn’t commit\, Phillips was in prison for 46 years. Creating art enabled him to persist and deal with the injustice of his situation. “I didn’t actually think I’d ever be free again. This art is what I did to stay sane\,” Phillips said. “I could get off into one of my paintings and just be in there for hours.” Today\, collectors and viewers alike appreciate the beauty he created throughout those long decades. \nPart of the Kalamazoo Art League Lecture Series \nThis event is a rescheduled presentation and will be free and open to the public. No registration required.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion: Black Indian: A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:by Shonda Buchanan \nThis powerful\, deeply personal narrative explores Buchanan’s complex identity. She reflects on the trauma\, resilience\, and strength passed down through generations\, as well as the tensions and misunderstandings she encountered due to her mixed heritage. Throughout\, she weaves in stories of her ancestors\, shedding light on the hidden and painful history of African and Indigenous people in America. The author explores a range of heavy topics in relation to her family life in Kalamazoo and the surrounding area therefore people and places are mentioned by name. From the author’s note\, “I introduce social\, racial\, and cultural issues and explore their implications in relation to my family. This is not a scholarly book. It is a story\, and I do not mean to offend anyone with it.” Discussion will connect themes in the memoir with pieces from Indigenous artists currently on view.

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: Artist’s Talk with Kelly Church
DESCRIPTION:Meet artist Kelly Church\, an Ottawa/Pottawatomi black ash basket maker\, fiber artist\, educator\, activist\, and culture keeper. A member of the Gun Lake Band in Michigan and descendent of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Ojibwe\, she comes from an unbroken line of black ash basket makers and from the largest black ash weaving family in the Great Lakes region.  \nThrough her distinctive artwork and in workshops led across the country\, Church advocates for the survival of Indigenous cultural traditions and teaches about the black ash tree. The tree is central to the traditions of many Native American and First Nations tribes and critically endangered by the invasive Emerald Ash Borer beetle.  \nShe has been named a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow\, has earned a Native Arts and Cultures Foundation’s National Artist Fellowship\, and has been a four-time Artist Leadership Program participant with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Her black ash piece Every Dawn is a New Day\, a new work acquired by the KIA in 2024\, is on view in the Legendary Voices exhibition.

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: Image Meets Text: A Legendary Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled! The exhibition Legendary Voices: Art for the Next Century invites visitors to view much-loved pieces from the KIA’s collection in fresh ways\, often drawing unexpected connections between very different works of art. In keeping with this concept\, educational programming throughout the run of the exhibition will offer guests opportunities to engage with the visual arts through other artistic media.  \nIn this workshop\, led by celebrated local poet\, visual artist\, and educator Denise Miller\, participants will explore different approaches to the process of writing poems inspired by works of visual art. They will then select pieces from the Legendary Voices exhibition and formulate poetic responses\, with the option to share their work with the group in a gallery walkthrough. No prior experience with poetic writing is required\, and beginners are very welcome. \nEnjoy grab and go refreshments as part of Member Appreciation Week. \nGenerous support provided by Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program.

SUMMARY:Gallery Gatherings: Roscoe Hall and Tylonn Sawyer; Chinese Goddess Figures
DESCRIPTION:We are combining January’s planned Gallery Gathering with a rescheduled one from December! \nFirst from 5:30–6pm\, we will delve into questions of American life and identity with a discussion of Roscoe Hall’s With Great Intent to Leave It All For You and Tylonn Sawyer’s American Woman: Columbia. These pieces are paired together in Legendary Voices: Art for the Next Century for their shared focus on contemporary African American experiences. \nNext\, from 6–6:30pm\, we will gather in the Joy Light Gallery to observe a trio of figures representing Bixia Yuanjun and Guanyin. Sometimes conflated with one another\, these two Chinese goddesses are both associated with compassion\, protection\, and fertility. They differ\, however\, in their stories of origin and the ways in which they have historically been depicted in art. Together\, we will examine renderings of these goddesses in bronze\, porcelain\, and jade.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion: The Friday Night Club: A Novel of Artist Hilma af Klint and Her Creative Circle
DESCRIPTION:by Sofia Lundberg\, Alyson Richman\, and M.J. Rose \nWith alternating storylines set in early 1900s Sweden and present-day New York City\, this historical fiction book considers the enduring power of Hilma af Klint’s art. Hilma\, along with four female friends\, collectively known as The Five\, gather together on Friday nights to perform seances in the hopes of receiving mystic visions. These visions would be messages from spirits who would help guide their artistic potential. In the present day\, Eben Elliott is bringing the Hilma af Klint art exhibition to The Guggenheim Museum.  During this process\, Eben begins to uncover questions about The Five and the art they created. As Eben continues his research he puts his professional and personal life at risk. Threads of history\, passion\, and destiny are woven together in this story that explores art\, creativity\, and the power of relationships.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Exploring Common Myths about the Samurai
DESCRIPTION:The remarkable success of the 2024 television series Shogun is only the latest example of popular fascination with Japan’s historical warriors\, the samurai. Despite all this attention\, the samurai remain puzzling for many people: products of both history and myth who have been repeatedly reinvented and used to explain everything from Japanese business practices to the purported uniqueness of Japanese baseball. Who were these warriors? Drawing examples from the complicated history of the samurai\, this talk will answer that question and explore why they have become such an enduring and popular symbol of Japan. \nDr. Dennis J. Frost is the Wen Chao Chen Professor of East Asian Social Sciences at Kalamazoo College\, where he teaches courses on the entire scope of premodern\, modern\, and contemporary East Asian history. He received his Ph.D. in 2007 from Columbia University\, specializing in modern Japanese history. He has written widely on Japanese history\, including his books Seeing Stars: Sports Celebrity\, Identity\, and Body Culture in Modern Japan\, and More Than Medals: A History of the Paralympics and Disability Sports in Postwar Japan. \nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. Recordings of select past events are available on YouTube as well. No registration is necessary in order to join in virtually.
