Art Against Hunger
For the third year in a row, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is partnering with Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes with a food drive called Art Against Hunger. Art Against Hunger uses art as a platform to entertain, educate and inspire creativity while at the same time, bringing awareness to the needs of the hungry in Kalamazoo.
Donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, located at 314 South Park Street in downtown Kalamazoo beginning October 1. Donations will also be accepted at the following Downtown Kalamazoo Retail and Restaurant Association locations during Art Hop on Friday, October 7: Cakes Boutique, Irvings Market Deli, Gazelle Sports, V&A Bootery, Chemical Bank, Michigan News Agency, Millennium Restaurant Group, Kalamazoo Gazette, Nature Connection , Plata y Oro Jewelers, Mangia Mangia, Websters Prime, Zazios, Idun Spa Salon and Sofia Floral.
Those who donate will receive a ticket to attend Art & All That Jazz for 1/2 price on Friday, November 18, 5:30-7:30 pm. KIA Members who donate will receive a 1/2 price drink ticket. Special musical guest is Embarr. Arcadia Ale beers and select wines provided by Imperial Beverages are available for purchase, and complimentary food is provided by Panera Bread. Galleries will be open. Art & All That Jazz is sponsored by Panera Bread, DeNooyer Chevrolet and Imperial Beverages.
For the "Art" part of Art Against Hunger, the KIA is excited to have local artist Steve Curl create an interactive art sculpture using donated canned goods. The finished structure will be featured in the KIA school commons area during Art & All That Jazz. Steve Curl is a popular Michigan artist known for his use of discarded metals like aluminum to create robots and other fun free-standing sculptures like Japathar, a popular attraction at the Kalamazoo Art Fair.
The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is excited to partner with Steve Curl to help make Art Against Hunger our most successful food drive yet!
