MRC artWorks featured in the Gallery Shop

The KIA Gallery shop is thrilled to partner with MRC artWorks

MRC artWorks offers unique and affordable art created by individuals with disabilities, providing an outlet to achieve creative self‐expression in a way that promotes personal growth, dignity, and self-confidence.

All artists receive a commission for the sale of their work, which not only serves as their source of income, but also enhances and reinforces their self-esteem and self-worth. MRC artWorks provides a safe, positive, and creative environment that focuses on the individual’s abilities rather than their disabilities.

Artist Spotlight

Susan McHenry

Susan McHenry

Handmade pots can enhance our daily lives and elevate simple moments we might otherwise take for granted, like sitting quietly wiht a cup of coffee or serving a meal to beloved friends. Items made by hand provide a direct human connection. Look closely and you’ll see the evidence of this: my fingerprint visible somewhere on the surface, the way I considered the lip on a mug or the comfort of a handle, the expressive quality of my brushwork. I think of these marks of intention as the beginning of a conversation between maker and user, a conversation I hope will continue for many years to come.

Thomas Rumsey

Thomas Rumsey

Wood turning is the primary focus of Tom Rumsey’s current work. In choosing unusual pieces of wood, Tom sees cracks, holes and rotten sections as unique challenges. He revels in these imperfections as shape and texture unfold disclosing the natural balance of form and light to dark. A member of the Grand Rapids Wood Turners Guild, Tom has recently shown his work in group, invitational and juried exhibitions in Southwest Michigan. His work was accepted as part of the West Michigan Area Show at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

David Boslar

David Boslar

Having worked for over 40 years in glass of one form or another, David currently is working in lampwork using borosilicate glass which is created using a propane/oxygen torch and traditional flame-working techniques. David has studied with many well-known glass artists, including Loren Stump, Emilio Santini, Milton Townsend and Tim Drier.

Heather Briggs

Heather Briggs

Heather grew up exploring different art mediums at the Kirk Newman Art School, which led her to combine cyanotype, a photographic blueprint, and origami. The cyanotype origami creations are a multi-stepped, time-consuming process. First, cyanotype solution is brushed on a thin Japanese paper called Masa. Flowers/leaves are then pressed into the paper to make the organic design. After exposing the paper to sunshine, it is developed in water, leaving a silhouette of leaves and flowers that is blocked by the sunlight. Heather has exhibited her origami installations such as “The Exhale Project,” which was her KIA residency project.
