2019 High School Area Show and Congressional Art Competition
Exhibition Dates: April 25-May 26, 2019
Join the artists and their family and friends on Thursday, April 25, 5:30-7:30 pm for an Opening Reception & Award Ceremony.
Now in its 37th year, the High School Area Show is a unique opportunity for students in grades 9-12 to have their achievements recognized in a museum while being eligible for thousands of dollars in scholarships.
Concurrently, a student artist will be named winner of the 6th District Congressional Art Competition. That student's work will hang in the U.S. Capitol for a year, as part of the national Congressional Art Competition. The artist will receive free airfare for two to Washington, D.C. to attend an artists reception. The 6th Congressional District includes the Michigan counties of Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, or Van Buren counties.
Our 2019 juror is artist and educator Jill Waskowsky, who was an art teacher at Portage Central High School, from 1987-2014 until her retirement in 2014. Jill is also an artist who works in oil pastels, ceramics, and sculpture.
In addition to $100 juror's cash awards, college art programs expected to grant scholarship support include:
Central Michigan University
Cleveland Institute of Art
College for Creative Studies, Detroit
Gwen Frostic School of Art, Western Michigan University
Indiana University, South Bend
Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University
