Kirk Newman Art School
Hands-On Open House Event
March 26, 6-9 p.m., FREE Admission!

Kalamazoo, MI - Friday, March 5, 2010. Are you curious to know if you have undiscovered artistic talent? Wouldn't it be great if you could try a variety of different art forms at once to find out? Good news! You can do just that at the Kirk Newman Art School Hands-On Open House on Friday, March 26, 6-9 p.m.

If you have never been to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, you may not be aware that it's far more than an art museum but also the Midwest's premier art school known as the Kirk Newman Art School. More than 300 classes are taught there annually, led by a faculty of professional, practicing artists. The Kirk Newman Art School offers the perfect mix of hard-to-find, traditional media like loom weaving and bronze casting and 21st century visual arts media like our state-of-the-art computer lab for graphic design and digital filmmaking.

The Hands-On Open House Event was created to offer everyone (children, teens and adults) the opportunity to try their hand at a variety of art mediums, learning techniques first hand by the talented faculty who practice these art forms. This event is perfect for anyone who has ever desired to take an art class at the Kirk Newman Art School but was unsure what art form they might be interested in.

This event is not your typical arts & crafts project. Participants will have the chance to use real art studio equipment and tools, and try their hand at the following projects: throw a pot on the potter's wheel, Raku a pot, watercolor a note card, fabricate a pendant, create a glass ornament or suncatcher, develop a photo in the photography lab, create a digital caricature on the computer, silkscreen a scarf, create a wire sculpture or just watch and learn!

Hands-On

The Hands-On event has something for everyone. Whether your interest is sculpting, painting, glass, photography, jewelry, fiber or graphic design, the Kirk Newman Art School is offering you the chance to try it all!
