$308,000+ in Prizes and Scholarships Awarded in High School Area Show at KIA

Posted: March 24, 2016

KALAMAZOO, MI -- The 35th annual High School Area Show opened Thursday night at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Awards and scholarships valued at more than $308,000 were given out, including scholarships to the Cleveland Institute of Art; Kendall School of Art and Design, Ferris State University; Gwen Frostic School of Art, Western Michigan University; and the Kirk Newman Art School, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts.

More than 300 works were submitted from artists in grades 9-12, from 25 schools from Allegan, Berrien, Branch, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Van Buren counties. The exhibition runs through May 4.

This year's juror was Ginger Owen, Associate Professor of Photography and Intermedia, Gwen Frostic School of Art, Western Michigan University, who chose 84 works by 75 artists.

"Guiding factors that led me in filtering works were craftsmanship, originality of concept, and personal preference,"she says. "All the art work, whether rejected or accepted, were worthy of being considered for this exhibition."

For the second year, the exhibition partnered with 6th Congressional District to select a representative in the Congressional Art Competition. Madeline Peterson, age 16, of Portage Northern High School, won the honor for her work, Pictured Rocks, which will hang in the U.S. Capitol for a year. Ms. Peterson will also receive round trip airfare for two to Washington, D.C.

A number of students won more than one honor, and all of the work is on view through May 4 at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Each exhibiting artists was awarded a family membership to the KIA through the end of the summer. The exhibition sponsor is Special-Lite.
