2010 West Michigan Area Show Call for Entries

February 15, 2010 Deadline!

Kalamazoo, MI - Wednesday, December 16, 2010. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is calling all artists to submit their best work for the 2010 West Michigan Area Show!

Since the 1960s, this annual exhibition has showcased the exceptional work of area artists in all media. Prizes and awards of over $5,000 are also selected. Deadline for the submission of digital images from artists in the 14-county area will be February 15, 2010 (postmarked by February 10).

WMAS 2010 LogoEntry forms are now available!

This year, you may print a downloadable PDF or submit your entry online. Both forms are available on the 2010 WMAS Artist Information page on our website.

If you would like to learn how to digitally photograph your art, you may sign up for Photographing Art with Digital Cameras (824) with Jim Riegel through the Kirk Newman Art School. It will be held from 1-3:30 p.m.on Saturday, January 23, 30 and February 6.

The 2010 WMAS will be judged by Gladys Nilsson. Nilsson's own work reveals the incongruities in life using humor, irony, and visual or verbal puns. "Whimsical" is a term often used to describe the distorted figures and brilliant colors of her highly stylized work.

Nilsson has been painting her distinctive watercolors since the 1960s when she emerged onto the national art scene with fellow Chicago Imagist and Hairy Who members. She has exhibited in over 600 solo and group shows at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum, and Smithsonian Institution. Nilsson teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She will give an Artist Talk at the KIA on Monday, April 5 at 7 p.m.
