KALAMAZOO, MI -- The 34th annual High School Area Show opened Friday night at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Awards and scholarships valued at more than $325,000 were given out, including scholarships to the Cleveland Institute of Art; Kendall School of Art and Design, Ferris State University; Gwen Frostic School of Art, Western Michigan University; and the Kirk Newman Art School, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts.

This annual juried exhibition runs through May 24, and features works by artists 18 years or younger, in grades 9-12, from Benton Harbor, Coldwater, Comstock, Gull Lake, Kalamazoo, Lawton, Mattawan, Parchment, Paw Paw, Plainwell, Portage, St. Joseph, Stevensville, Vicksburg, Watervliet, and Three Rivers.

This year's juror, artist and curator Greg Waskowsky, has organized the exhibition since it began in 1982. Recently retired after 40 years with KIA, he selected 86 works to hang in the exhibition, six works to receive Juror's Awards, and 13 to receive Honorable Mentions.

For the second year, the exhibition partnered with 6th Congressional District to help the artists concurrently enter the Congressional Art Competition. Henderson Castle, a work in pastel by Grady Hively, was selected to hang in the U.S. Capitol and compete in the Congressional Art Competition. Mr. Hively will also receive round trip airfare for two to Washington, D.C.
