The opening reception for the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts' 34th annual High School Area Show will be Friday, April 24, 5:30 - 7:30 pm. An awards ceremony is set for 6:30 pm. The evening is free and open to the public.

The show will exhibit 90 works of art juried from submissions by artists in grades 9-12 from Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Van Buren counties, in a variety of mediums, including glass, 2-D, 3-D, video, ceramics, metal, and jewelry.

Educator, artist, and curator Greg Waskowsky, recently retired from the KIA, selected works to exhibit in the show, along with winners of cash awards and scholarships. Additional scholarships will be awarded and were chosen by the Gwen Frostic School of Art, Western Michigan University; Kendall College of Art and Design, Ferris State University; and the Cleveland Institute of Art.

As well, the 6th District Congressional Office of Rep. Fred Upton will announce an artist chosen to represent the district in Washington as part of the Congressional Art Competition. His or her work will hang for one year in the U.S. Capitol, and the artist will receive airfare for two to Washington, D.C., for an artist reception. Further details: bit.ly/2015CAC.
