Kevin_BuistThe Kalamazoo Institute of Arts will welcome Kevin Buist, Director of Exhibitions for ArtPrize, to speak at 6 pm on Thursday, November 6. He will share his thoughts on the recently completed sixth year of ArtPrize, and what he thinks the future will be for the international art extravaganza.

ArtPrize is an independently organized competition that turns downtown Grand Rapids into a 19-day visual and performance art hub, drawing artists and patrons from around the world. Earlier this month, it awarded top honors and $300,000 to its popular vote and juried vote winner, Intersections, by Anila Quayyum Agha.

Buist oversees exhibitions and cultural programming for ArtPrize, and directs the selection of jurors for the competition's juried awards. A Calvin alumnus, he has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in New York City and Grand Rapids, and has been featured in print and online publications including the Art:21 blog, Solace Magazine, Art Hack, and SpoutBlog.

ArtPrize is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, created to level the playing field and offer anyone a voice in the conversation about what is art and why it matters. A recent article in Fast Company notes that ArtPrize happens "without the curators, collectors, PR people, and galleries that turn the wheels and pull the levers (and strings) of the traditional art world."

Kevin Buist's talk is part of the KIA's weekly Thursday evening series. It is is free with admission to the KIA, which is $5, $2 for students. Admission is free for KIA members, active military, school groups, and youth 12 and under. Learn more at kiarts.org.

RSVP by November 1: 269-585-9279 or jays@kiarts.org.
