West Michigan is home to a talented community of visual artists, and some of their finest recent work will be on display at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts in its annual West Michigan Area Show. The exhibition opens Saturday, May 7 and continues through Sunday, June 26.

A juried exhibition, the Area Show draws hundreds of entries from a 14-county region of West Michigan. This year, 650 works were submitted from 330 artists, in media ranging from paintings, prints and photos to mosaics, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture and mixed-media works. From these, 116 works were chosen to be included in the exhibition.

This year's guest juror is artist John Glick. For Glick, exploring new processes and daring to experiment have kept him engaged as a professional artist for more than 40 years. At his Plum Tree Pottery studio in Farmington Hills, he creates both functional vessels and sculptural works. His glaze treatments reveal a painterly sensibility to form and color. John Glick exhibits widely and his work is highly sought for collections nationwide, including the Smithsonian Institution, American Craft Museum, and Los Angeles County Museum. Glick will give an Artist Talk at the KIA on May 2, at 7:00 p.m. The talk is free and open to the public.

The KIA will announce winners of its 2011 West Michigan Area Show awards in a public reception on Friday, May 6, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. The awards ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. More than $5,000 will be awarded. Cash prizes are awarded to the juror's selection of the top five works and seven community-sponsored works in designated media. Three additional cash prizes are awarded for a work purchased for the KIA collection, a work representing the magical realism style, and the "People's Choice"--the work receiving the most votes by June 19. The People's Choice winner will be announced at ArtBreak, 12 p.m., Tuesday, June 21.
