Kalamazoo, MI - Friday, October 9, 2009. On October 14, 2009, the Kalamazoo Art League is hosting an art lecture with Gordon Alt, executive director of the John Cavanaugh Foundation and curator for the exhibition, In Search of Motion: John Cavanaugh Sculptor 1921-1988, showing now through November 8 at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts.

Small Gordon Alt

The talk begins at 10 a.m. Admission is free to Kalamazoo Art League members, $10 general admission, and $3 for students from WMU, K College, KVCC and the Kirk Newman Art School with ID. A reception following the presentation is included in admission.

Gordon Alt will discuss the life and work of John Cavanaugh, and how Cavanaugh's distinct metal work is rarely seen practiced by sculptors today. A tutorial of the art featured in In Search of Motion will provide guests a deeper understanding of the unique challenges faced, and talent required to work with metal-work sculpture.

Gordon Alt's distinguished career includes serving on a three person advisory team for David Rockefeller Sr., being Director of Woodlawn Plantation and the Frank Lloyd Wright historic Pope-Leighey House Museums, and many projects in Turkey, Finland, and the Czech Republic as Director with the International Forum for Art. He is currently the Executive Director of the John Cavanaugh Foundation in Washington, DC.

Membership in the Kalamazoo Art League is open to any member of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Benefits include free admission to all Art League programs, priority reservations for DepARTures trips to private collections and other museums, and invitations to additional social events. Membership to the Kalamazoo Art League costs $35.
