The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts welcomes all to "Everyone's a Member Day." On Friday, August 21, the public is invited to the museum for free admission, school and shop discounts, and an evening reception with music, refreshments, and an exhibition preview.

The evening reception celebrates the opening of Common Ground: African American Art from the Flint Institute of Arts, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, and the Muskegon Museum of Art, with sculpture, paintings, and works on paper by more than 60 artists.

The "friend-raising" event invites the public to:

  • Take $20 off a fall class at the Kirk Newman Art School with on-site registration, 8 am-8 pm.
  • Enjoy a discount on purchases in the Gallery Shop, which specializes in jewelry, accessories, children's gifts, home decor, and work by local artists, 10 am-8 pm.
  • Bring friends and family for free admission to the museum s galleries, 11 am-8 pm.
  • Be a guest at an exhibition preview and reception at 5:30 pm, for light refreshments, music by Yolonda Lavender until 6:30 pm, and a first look at Common Ground.
  • Enjoy a curator's talk by Tracee Glab, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Flint Institute of Arts, 6:30 pm

Throughout the day, staff and volunteers will be welcoming guests and answering questions about fall classes at the art school, upcoming fall programs, and the benefits of membership, which include year-round free admission, shop and class discounts, members-only events, and early class registration and shopping at the holiday sale.

"Common Ground offers an exhilarating array of creativity and personal expression by some of the country's most important artists," says KIA Executive Director Belinda Tate. "It traces a journey through 150 years of cultural history, from the talent and determination of the earliest artists, to internationally acclaimed work by leading contemporary artists."
