West Michigan Area Show
June 8 - August 31, 2013
West Michigan is home to a talented community of visual artists, and some of their finest recent work will be on display at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts in its annual West Michigan Area Show. Since the 1960s, this annual exhibition has showcased the exceptional work of area artists in all media.
A juried exhibition, the Area Show draws hundreds of entries from a 14-county region of West Michigan. The juror will view accepted works on site at the KIA to assign over $4,000 in cash awards.
WMAS 2013 Juror Graham W. J. Beal has been the Director, President, and CEO of the Detroit Institute of Arts since 1999. The DIA has undergone a major renovation and expansion under Beal's leadership, in addition to a reinstallation of their world-renowned collection. During his tenure, the DIA has overseen multiple exhibitions including Degas and the Dance in 2002, Van Gogh: Face to Face in 2003, Camille Claudel and Rodin: Fateful Encounter in 2006, and more recently, Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus in 2012. Beal has published several books, exhibition catalogs, and articles including an exhibition catalogue on the DIA's American paintings. Prior to his arrival in Detroit, he served as director at numerous institutions, including the L.A. County Museum of Art, the Joslyn Art Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Beal is a native of Great Britain, born in Stratford-on-Avon. He has degrees in English and Art History from the University of Manchester and the Courtauld Institute of Art.
