Kalamazoo Art League Hosts Gerhardt Knodel

Lecture on contemporary fiber arts.

Kalamazoo, MI - Thursday, October 29, 2009. Kalamazoo Art League is hosting an art lecture with Gerhardt Knodel, one of the nation's most foremost fiber artists, on Wednesday, November 11, 2009.

Art League Speaker - Gerhardt Knodel

The talk begins at 10 a.m. Admission is free to Kalamazoo Art League members, $10 general admission, and $3 for students from WMU, K College, KVCC and the Kirk Newman Art School with ID. A reception following the presentation is included in admission.

Many artists pioneering in the field of fiber arts today trace their inspiration to the talent and leadership of Gerhardt Knodel, former director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In his talk, Knodel will explore contemporary fiber arts from a historical perspective representing a retrospective of his own work, works in his personal collection, and those of his students.

As an artist, Knodel has consistently explored the expressive potential of textiles to affect one's sense of place and being, particularly in the context of contemporary architecture. Throughout his career, Knodel's work has been presented in national and international exhibitions and has been recognized extensively with publications, awards and commissions. Knodel is a graduate of UCLA and California State University at Long Beach.
