Billboard Art provides 10 artists with 10 billboards for 1 year of advertising. These billboards will rotate among up to 1,300 regional sites and will be seen by thousands of patrons! To qualify, artists must live or operate their studios in Kalamazoo County, provide entries suitable for a 14' x 48' billboard and if they are selected as a winner, pay $250 to cover half of the billboard vinyl production cost.
More than 60 artists applied and an artist panel selected 20 candidates to be voted in by the public. Voting took place on the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts website, www.kiarts.org/billboardart and more than 2,000 votes poured in to determine the final 10 artists.
The billboards will be on display May 2011-May 2012.
Winners also receive free hosting of their artwork, contact information and artist statement at a designated URL on the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts website, www.kiarts.org as well as be feted at a KIA reception on Friday, October 21, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. during Art & All That Jazz. Artists' works will be on display and available for purchase.
Billboard Art is presented by Adams Outdoor Advertising and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. The program was developed as a way to promote local artists and contribute to the atmosphere of Kalamazoo being a thriving artist community. Because the vinyl production and rental of billboard space is cost prohibitive for most artists, (average cost is $2,000 and up, depending on location, for one month of stationary rental space) an opportunity like Billboard Art is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and Adams Outdoor Advertising plan to make Billboard Art an annual contest. For more information regarding Billboard Art, please contact:
