SUMMARY:Statement Pieces: A Curatorial Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Statement Pieces: Fashioning the Self & Society brings contemporary fashion objects from the Barrett Barrera Projects collection together with selections from the KIA’s permanent collection. Placed in conversation with one another\, fashion and visual art present a powerful commentary on identity\, self-expression\, and social constructions both embraced and contested. During this program\, Kelly Peck\, exhibition co-curator and Vice President of Barrett Barrera Projects\, joins Rehema Barber\, KIA Director of Curatorial Affairs\, for a conversation on this dynamic exhibition and its unique presentation at the KIA. \nKelly Peck is Vice President of Barrett Barrera Projects (BBP)\, where she oversees museum partnerships\, exhibition touring\, and company operations. She has played a leading role in building BBP’s national and international touring program. Her curatorial work includes A Queen Within\, Lee Alexander McQueen & Ann Ray: Rendez-Vous\, and Statement Pieces\, exhibitions bringing contemporary fashion into dialogue with photography\, fine art\, and visual culture. \nStatement Pieces is organized in conjunction with Barrett Barrera Projects. DESCRIPTION:Statement Pieces: Fashioning the Self & Society juxtaposes works from the KIA’s collection with contemporary fashion from the Barrett Barrera Projects collection to examine how self-presentation and identity have been shaped and reimagined over the last 200 years. Fashion and portraiture address more than appearance—they can present ideas\, status\, and even offer visibility. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Clothing Clues: Decoding Signals in Fashion
DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, Iris Carney Cooper will discuss concepts of art\, history\, and fashion that allow designers to manipulate the human form for storytelling purposes. How does clothing define a person? What elements are used in garment construction to tell a larger story? This glimpse into the craft will show how to spot clues in clothing by exploring fashion trends\, symbolism\, and societal expectations. \nIris Carney Cooper is a fashion historian\, currently teaching at Western Michigan University and managing the Historic Garment Collection. She received her BA in Fashion Design and Merchandising from Dominican University in River Forest\, IL\, and her Graduate Certificate in History from WMU. \nStatement Pieces is organized in conjunction with Barrett Barrera Projects. DESCRIPTION:Venture offsite with us as we visit our neighbors at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre! While the Statement Pieces exhibition encourages us to consider the relationship between fashion and self-expression\, this program will explore the ways in which clothing is used to establish vital aspects of dramatic characters onstage. During this program\, dancers will respond to the exhibition with improvisational movement inspired by the ways in which clothing moves and shapes the body\, offering freedom or restriction. \nKalamazoo holds the unique distinction of being home to one of the nation’s longest-standing\, small professional modern dance companies. Since its founding in 1981\, Wellspring has introduced thousands to the art of dance\, has enriched the Kalamazoo arts community through collaborations with professional artists\, and has become a platform for advancing postmodern dance choreography. \nPlease be advised that this program involves standing and walking; gallery stools will be available.
