SUMMARY:Gallery Gathering: Sheila Pree Bright's Cotton and Dulce Pinzón's Catwoman
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Sheila Pree Bright’s series Invisible Empire foregrounds the tension between the pastoral beauty of the American South and the historical exploitation of Black lives and labor that stains the landscape. In her series The Real Story of the Superheroes\, Dulce Pinzón centers immigrant workers whose everyday heroism takes the form of quiet sacrifice and courage in the face of often extreme labor conditions. During this Gallery Gathering\, we will discuss two artworks from these series featured in For the People\, By the People.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Remembering World War II in Japanese Voices
DESCRIPTION:Sociolinguist Noriko Sugimori has often worked with her students to collect oral histories from Japanese-speaking World War II survivors in Japan\, South Korea\, and the United States. Their testimonies reveal personal experiences that have often remained untold and show how the past continues to shape the present. Drawing on video excerpts from these interviews\, Dr. Sugimori will explore the stories\, silences\, and meanings preserved in wartime memory. \nDr. Sugimori is Professor of Japanese at Kalamazoo College. Her Mellon Foundation-funded Japanese-English oral history project was the first in using the bilingual Oral History Metadata Synchronizer. At Kalamazoo College\, she teaches the Japanese language at all levels\, as well as sociolinguistics.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Cats of Mirikitani
DESCRIPTION:Jimmy Mirikitani (1920-2012) was a Japanese American artist who survived the trauma of WWII incarceration\, the loss of family and friends in his ancestral city of Hiroshima\, a harsh life on the streets of New York\, and the chaos of 9/11—all by making art. Sitting alone on a windy corner in Soho\, he drew whimsical cats\, bleak concentration camps\, and the angry red flames of the atomic bomb. Blending beauty and humor with tragedy and loss\, The Cats of Mirikitani is an intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of war and the healing power of art. \nThis film was directed and produced by Linda Hattendorf\, who has worked in the New York documentary community for decades. Her editing work has aired on PBS\, A&E\, and The Sundance Channel\, as well as in theatrical venues and hundreds of festivals. Produced in 2006\, The Cats of Mirikitani was her directorial debut and won awards at more than thirty film festivals around the world. The film has a run time of 74 minutes.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Film Screening: The Eye is the First Circle
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, Helen Frankenthaler’s large-scale painting Code Blue returns from New York\, where it was included in the Gagosian exhibition Helen Frankenthaler: The Moment and the Distance. Celebrate the return of this beloved part of the KIA’s permanent collection with a screening of The Eye is the First Circle. Inspired by Mary Gabriel’s bestseller Ninth Street Women\, this 2022 documentary centers the work of Frankenthaler and her female contemporaries — Grace Hartigan\, Elaine de Kooning\, Joan Mitchell\, and Lee Krasner — who broke new ground in the field of Abstract Expressionism despite the marginalization they faced in mid-20th century America. The Eye is the First Circle was created by Schler Productions in partnership with PBS12 (Denver)\, and has a run time of 56 minutes.

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: Intergenerational Impacts of the Japanese American Wartime Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of Pearl Harbor and the United States’ declaration of war on Japan\, the U.S. government ordered the removal of more than 120\,000 men\, women\, and children from their homes based on their Japanese ancestry and imprisoned them in remote incarceration camps. Two-thirds were U.S. citizens. In this talk\, Dr. Donna Nagata will examine how the lasting consequences of this wartime trauma continue to shape experiences of postwar third- and fourth-generation Japanese Americans. \nDonna Nagata\, Ph.D.\, is Professor of Psychology in the Clinical Science Area at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. She has studied the psychosocial effects of the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans for over three decades\, with a particular focus on postwar multigenerational impacts.

SUMMARY:Statement Pieces: A Curatorial Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Statement Pieces: Fashioning the Self & Society brings contemporary fashion objects from the Barrett Barrera Projects collection together with selections from the KIA’s permanent collection. Placed in conversation with one another\, fashion and visual art present a powerful commentary on identity\, self-expression\, and social constructions both embraced and contested. During this program\, Kelly Peck\, exhibition co-curator and Vice President of Barrett Barrera Projects\, joins Rehema Barber\, KIA Director of Curatorial Affairs\, for a conversation on this dynamic exhibition and its unique presentation at the KIA. \nKelly Peck is Vice President of Barrett Barrera Projects (BBP)\, where she oversees museum partnerships\, exhibition touring\, and company operations. She has played a leading role in building BBP’s national and international touring program. Her curatorial work includes A Queen Within\, Lee Alexander McQueen & Ann Ray: Rendez-Vous\, and Statement Pieces\, exhibitions bringing contemporary fashion into dialogue with photography\, fine art\, and visual culture. \nStatement Pieces is organized in conjunction with Barrett Barrera Projects. Made possible by generous support from Diane & Randy Eberts and Heritage Community of Kalamazoo.

SUMMARY:Statement Pieces Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Statement Pieces: Fashioning the Self & Society juxtaposes works from the KIA’s collection with contemporary fashion from the Barrett Barrera Projects collection to examine how self-presentation and identity have been shaped and reimagined over the last 200 years. Fashion and portraiture address more than appearance—they can present ideas\, status\, and even offer visibility. They can also become sites where identity— particularly the construction of the feminine—is staged\, negotiated\, and at times challenged. \nJoin us for brief remarks at 5:30\, followed by an opportunity to explore the galleries and shop exhibition-related items at the Gallery Shop. Be among the first to experience how fashion and the visual arts influence understandings and representations of our identities. \nStatement Pieces is organized in conjunction with Barrett Barrera Projects. Made possible by generous support from Diane & Randy Eberts and Heritage Community of Kalamazoo. \nImage credit: Helen Frankenthaler\, Grey Fireworks\, 2000\, screenprint. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Clothing Clues: Decoding Signals in Fashion
DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, Iris Carney Cooper will discuss concepts of art\, history\, and fashion that allow designers to manipulate the human form for storytelling purposes. How does clothing define a person? What elements are used in garment construction to tell a larger story? This glimpse into the craft will show how to spot clues in clothing by exploring fashion trends\, symbolism\, and societal expectations. \nIris Carney Cooper is a fashion historian\, currently teaching at Western Michigan University and managing the Historic Garment Collection. She received her BA in Fashion Design and Merchandising from Dominican University in River Forest\, IL\, and her Graduate Certificate in History from WMU. \nStatement Pieces is organized in conjunction with Barrett Barrera Projects.
