DESCRIPTION:Chinese\, Korean\, and Japanese artists have been painting pictures of birds for more than 1000 years. With an estimated 50 billion birds flying around us all the time\, this comes as little surprise. Birders\, who partake in one of the globe’s fastest-growing\, multi-generational pastimes\, know our feathered friends offer endless variety and incredible beauty. During this Joy Light Lecture in East Asian Art\, Dr. Robert Mintz will guide our exploration of East Asian “bird and flower painting” through the joy of “artistic bird-watching.” \nKalamazoo Art League is delighted to sponsor this year’s Joy Light Lecture in East Asian Art and will provide a reception before the presentation\, starting at 5:30 pm. \nDr. Mintz is the Chief Curatorial Director of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. A specialist in 18th-century Japanese painting\, he oversees the art research and exhibitions program and guides the growth\, preservation\, and presentation of the museum’s Asian and Asian American art collections.

DESCRIPTION:The Kalamazoo Book Arts Center functions as a creative public space where artists and book enthusiasts of all kinds gather to celebrate the collaborative arts of the book\, including papermaking\, printmaking\, letterpress\, bookbinding\, and creative writing. KBAC preserves and employs traditional technologies while combining them with contemporary ideas and techniques. During this off-site ArtBreak\, we will venture to KBAC to learn more about the organization and its diverse array of offerings! \nThe Kalamazoo Book Arts Center is located on the first floor of the Park Trades Center at 326 W. Kalamazoo Ave.\, Suite 103A. Enter the studio through the central door on Kalamazoo Ave. Parking is available on the street and across from the building on N. Church St. Parking garages are located at the intersection of Eleanor and Rose\, and adjacent to the Radisson Plaza Hotel at the intersection of Water and Rose. Guests are also welcome to park in a KIA lot and walk to the Park Trades Center. Please do NOT park in the lot for Park Street Market or behind the Park Trades Center in the lot reserved for resident artists; cars parked in these lots are subject to towing.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for November Art Hop at the KIA with all galleries open for viewing\, washi collage making with Collage Crew Kzoo\, an Instrument Petting Zoo with Great Lakes Acoustic Music Association (GLAMA)\, along with light bites and beverages. \nIn the lobby you’ll find various acoustic instruments available to play and learn about with GLAMA. Musicians will be on site to walk you through the basics of each instrument. Come and try something new and jam at the KIA! \nIn the library you can express yourself through collage with a sampling of washi paper\, a traditional Japanese handmade paper. Some washi paper and tape will be provided to incorporate into your pieces. Be inspired by the exhibition on view\, Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper. All supplies will be provided. \nBallet Arts Ensemble will also be joining the fun to share information about the upcoming production of The Nutcracker and the KIA is proud to be participating in the Art Hop’s collaboration with Ministry with Community for a cold weather clothing drive. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: A Gift to the City She Loved: Genevieve Gilmore's Bequest
DESCRIPTION:In February 1959\, the front page of the Kalamazoo Gazette announced\, “The city is to have a new art center\,” with costs of construction paid by Mr. and Mrs. Donald S. Gilmore. In addition to their extraordinary philanthropy\, the Gilmores were KIA board members\, art collectors\, and skilled artists. Mrs. Gilmore’s bequest to the KIA following her death in 1990 was 66 masterpieces from her personal collection\, including works by Degas\, Renoir\, Rembrandt\, Cassatt\, and Matisse. During this ArtBreak\, Dr. Jim Carter will explore the life of Genevieve Upjohn Gilmore and her final gift to the city she loved. \nJim Carter is a retired physician who had a clinical practice of Internal Medicine in Kalamazoo for 36 years. He received his M.D. from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and his Internal Medicine training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester\, MN. He has been involved with the KIA for over four decades as a photography student\, board member\, board president\, and docent. As docent\, he has led numerous tours for KIA visitors and presented a number of talks on a wide range of topics. His major area of interest is the intersection of art with medicine. Most recently\, he wrote a comprehensive history of KIA for its centennial celebration.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Discussing Doggerel with Reginald Dwayne Betts
DESCRIPTION:Reginald Dwayne Betts’s latest poetry collection\, Doggerel\, explores themes of Blackness\, masculinity\, vulnerability\, and intimacy in a unique way–through the lens of dogs. This philosophical examination of everyday life\, combined with Betts personal experiences with incarceration and life after\, integrates the political with the personal. Join us as we discuss Doggerel with Betts in the Multicultural Center at Western Michigan University. During the event\, we will encourage and welcome community members’ questions for the author. Books will be available for purchase and signing following the discussion. \nThe Multicultural Center is located in room 1021 of the Adrian Trimpe Building on the campus of Western Michigan University\, at 1003 Ring Road South.
