DESCRIPTION:Learn more about the artist behind the Leo Villareal: Interstellar exhibition! During this virtual Artful Evening\, Villareal will discuss the last twenty years of his career\, delving deep into his practice of using code and light to create his work — from gallery exhibitions to complex architectural projects to monumental public artworks. \nLeo Villareal is a Mexican American light artist based in New York City. His work is in the permanent collections of the National Gallery in Washington\, D.C.\, The Museum of Modern Art in New York\, and the Buffalo AKG Museum in Buffalo\, NY\, among others. Villareal also creates monumental\, site-specific works\, including The Bay Lights (2013)\, a 1.8 mile long installation of 25\,000 LED lights on San Francisco’s Bay Bridge\, and Illuminated River (2019)\, which spans nine bridges along the Thames in London\, uniting them into a single monumental work of public art. \nThis program will be virtually presented over Zoom. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Enhancing Traditional Art with Digital Tools
DESCRIPTION:Explore how a variety of apps and digital tools can be used to help artists working in traditional media. Artist Kris Walker will lead a discussion of the ways in which technology can assist the contemporary artist\, from creating references to organizing artwork catalogs. We’ll discuss a wide range of methods by which artists can use digital tools to enhance the creative process\, explore new ideas\, and streamline some of the “work” involved in creating art. \nKris Walker is a photographer\, illustrator\, and designer with over thirty years of experience producing a wide range of creative projects for clients across the country. He also has taught design at Southwestern Michigan College and currently teaches Photoshop and other software in the Kirk Newman Art School’s Photography Department.

Join us for a workshop led by local artist Julia Wang\, a fourth-generation disciple of the Lingnan School! Create your own ink painting while learning more about this expressive art form and the many different ways in which influential Chinese artists have used ink to convey meaning throughout history. This workshop is free to attend\, but seats are limited – preregistration is highly encouraged!
