DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for the announcement of the the West Michigan Area Shows 2025 People’s Choice Award! The People’s Choice Award is sponsored by the Arts Council of Great Kalamazoo. Visit the galleries by Sunday\, July 6 to vote for the People’s Choice Award. \nThe work of West Michigan’s talented artistic community is on view during the annual West Michigan Area Show June 14–September 14. This crowd-pleasing annual juried exhibition is carefully curated from more than 300 submitted entries\, ranging from paintings\, prints\, and photos to mosaics\, ceramics\, jewelry\, sculpture\, and mixed-media works. \nThe 2025 juror is Detroit artist and teacher Hubert Massey. Hubert Massey is an award-winning Kresge Fine Arts Fellow. His distinctive fresco murals grace the halls of such visible Michigan destinations as the Flint Institute of the Arts\, Detroit Athletic Club\, and his alma mater\, Grand Valley State University. He studied at the University of London’s Slade Institute of Fine Arts and later learned the centuries-old fresco technique from former assistants of legendary artist Diego Rivera. \nSupport for the West Michigan Area Show is provided by CWS Financial Advisors and David Isaacson in memory of his wife\, Helen Sheridan. \nCWS

On July 31\, join us in the Gallery Shop as Danielle Vincent shares her handmade jewelry. \nAbout Ten26 Studio: \n“I’ve been making jewelry for nearly 20 years\, drawn to the challenge (and magic) of building forms by hand. Soldering is my happy place\, and I love turning raw metal into one-of-a-kind pieces that feel personal and intentional. I teach metalsmithing at the KIA and have spent over a decade showing my work at professional juried art shows across the country. Every piece I create is a little celebration of detail\, process\, and individuality—made to be worn\, loved\, and lived in. \nI’m drawn to unusual forms—whether it’s the curve of a petal\, the jagged edge of stone\, or the repeating lines in architecture. Organic or structural\, these shapes spark ideas that evolve into jewelry with texture\, movement\, and a story.\nNature definitely plays a big role in my work\, but it’s the details—the unexpected geometry\, the way light hits a surface\, the patterns hiding in plain sight—that really get me going. I translate those moments into pieces that feel both grounded and a little otherworldly. \nSustainability matters deeply to me. I work with recycled metals and consciously sourced stones because how something is made is just as important as what it becomes. I want my work to reflect respect—for the craft\, the materials\, and the world we live in. \nEach piece I make is meant to be more than an accessory—it’s a small\, wearable reminder of connection. To beauty\, to place\, and to the intricate details that often go unnoticed.”

DESCRIPTION:Learn more about the artist behind the Leo Villareal: Interstellar exhibition! During this virtual Artful Evening\, Villareal will discuss the last twenty years of his career\, delving deep into his practice of using code and light to create his work — from gallery exhibitions to complex architectural projects to monumental public artworks. \nLeo Villareal is a Mexican American light artist based in New York City. His work is in the permanent collections of the National Gallery in Washington\, D.C.\, The Museum of Modern Art in New York\, and the Buffalo AKG Museum in Buffalo\, NY\, among others. Villareal also creates monumental\, site-specific works\, including The Bay Lights (2013)\, a 1.8 mile long installation of 25\,000 LED lights on San Francisco’s Bay Bridge\, and Illuminated River (2019)\, which spans nine bridges along the Thames in London\, uniting them into a single monumental work of public art. \nThis program will be virtually presented over Zoom.
