SUMMARY:2025 West Michigan Area Show Awards Night and Members' Preview
DESCRIPTION:The work of West Michigan’s talented artistic community is on view during the annual West Michigan Area Show. Opening to the public on Saturday\, June 14\, this crowd-pleasing annual juried exhibition was carefully curated from more than 300 submitted entries\, ranging from paintings\, prints\, and photos to mosaics\, ceramics\, jewelry\, sculpture\, and mixed-media works. This year’s juror is Detroit artist and teacher Hubert Massey. \nDuring the Awards Ceremony on Friday\, June 13\, over $5\,000 in awards\, including a $1\,000 grand prize\, will be given to recognize excellence in varying media represented in this highly anticipated exhibition.  \nVisit the galleries by Sunday\, July 6 to vote for the People’s Choice Award. The winner of the People’s Choice Award\, sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo\, will be announced during Art Hop on July 11. \nSupport for the West Michigan Area Show is provided by CWS Financial Advisors and David Isaacson in memory of his wife\, Helen Sheridan.

Massey will share insights from his distinguished career\, exploring his creative process\, the inspiration behind his work\, and the significance of public art in building community. Following the lecture\, Massey will lead a brief gallery walk through the West Michigan Area Show exhibition\, offering his expert perspective on selected works and highlighting the themes and techniques that stood out to him as a juror. \nDr. Hubert Massey is an award-winning Kresge Fine Arts Fellow. His distinctive fresco murals grace the halls of such notable Michigan destinations as the Flint Institute of the Arts\, Detroit Athletic Club\, and his alma mater\, Grand Valley State University. He studied at the University of London’s Slade Institute of Fine Arts and later learned the centuries-old fresco technique from former assistants of legendary artist Diego Rivera.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of local filmmaker Davis Henderson’s newly-released film\, BODEWADMI NDAW. This documentary is focused on the efforts of the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians and the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi to revitalize their rapidly disappearing language\, Bodéwadmimwen. Following the screening and a Q&A with Henderson\, Holden Day will lead a beginner’s language workshop. I have been learning our language for nine years.” \nDavis Henderson (He/They) is a filmmaker\, voice actor\, and storyteller. He is also a citizen of the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians (also known to the community as the Gun Lake Tribe). On July 31\, join us in the Gallery Shop as Danielle Vincent shares her handmade jewelry. \nAbout Ten26 Studio: \n“I’ve been making jewelry for nearly 20 years\, drawn to the challenge (and magic) of building forms by hand. Soldering is my happy place\, and I love turning raw metal into one-of-a-kind pieces that feel personal and intentional. I teach metalsmithing at the KIA and have spent over a decade showing my work at professional juried art shows across the country. Every piece I create is a little celebration of detail\, process\, and individuality—made to be worn\, loved\, and lived in. \nI’m drawn to unusual forms—whether it’s the curve of a petal\, the jagged edge of stone\, or the repeating lines in architecture. Organic or structural\, these shapes spark ideas that evolve into jewelry with texture\, movement\, and a story.\nNature definitely plays a big role in my work\, but it’s the details—the unexpected geometry\, the way light hits a surface\, the patterns hiding in plain sight—that really get me going. I translate those moments into pieces that feel both grounded and a little otherworldly. \nSustainability matters deeply to me. I work with recycled metals and consciously sourced stones because how something is made is just as important as what it becomes. I want my work to reflect respect—for the craft\, the materials\, and the world we live in. \nEach piece I make is meant to be more than an accessory—it’s a small\, wearable reminder of connection. To beauty\, to place\, and to the intricate details that often go unnoticed.”
