SUMMARY:Artist’s Talk with Holly Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Artist Holly Roberts will speak about her body of work created over the past 40 years\, tracing her development as a pioneer in the world of altered photography. Mary Statzer\, Curator of Prints and Photographs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum\, has written\, “Holly Roberts’ contribution to the field of photography is without question. Her work has been added to the canon of experimental ‘creative’ photography in authoritative books on the subject for good reason. Few artists have so successfully combined photography and painting–seamlessly and to great effect–placing the imagined and the ‘real’ on equal footing to describe both lived experiences as well as psychological states and emotion.” \nHolly Roberts’ work has been shown internationally\, and she is represented by galleries across the country. In 2023\, she had a one-person exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Modern Art. She has had five monographs published about her work\, including a comprehensive survey of her work from her exhibit in San Diego called\, “Storyteller: Work by Holly Roberts.” She has received numerous awards and grants\, including two artist’s grants from National Endowments for the Arts. \nA selection of works by Holly Roberts is now on view in the Kirk Newman Art School Commons.

SUMMARY:2025 West Michigan Area Show Awards Night and Members' Preview
DESCRIPTION:The work of West Michigan’s talented artistic community is on view during the annual West Michigan Area Show. Opening to the public on Saturday\, June 14\, this crowd-pleasing annual juried exhibition was carefully curated from more than 300 submitted entries\, ranging from paintings\, prints\, and photos to mosaics\, ceramics\, jewelry\, sculpture\, and mixed-media works. This year’s juror is Detroit artist and teacher Hubert Massey. \nDuring the Awards Ceremony on Friday\, June 13\, over $5\,000 in awards\, including a $1\,000 grand prize\, will be given to recognize excellence in varying media represented in this highly anticipated exhibition.  \nVisit the galleries by Sunday\, July 6 to vote for the People’s Choice Award. The winner of the People’s Choice Award\, sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo\, will be announced during Art Hop on July 11. \nSupport for the West Michigan Area Show is provided by CWS Financial Advisors and David Isaacson in memory of his wife\, Helen Sheridan.

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: WMAS Juror’s Talk with Dr. Hubert Massey
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inspiring evening with acclaimed Detroit artist Dr. Hubert Massey\, the 2025 juror for the West Michigan Area Show. Massey is renowned for his large-scale public murals and frescoes\, which often celebrate the rich cultural history of Michigan and its people. Massey will share insights from his distinguished career\, exploring his creative process\, the inspiration behind his work\, and the significance of public art in building community. Following the lecture\, Massey will lead a brief gallery walk through the West Michigan Area Show exhibition\, offering his expert perspective on selected works and highlighting the themes and techniques that stood out to him as a juror. \nDr. Hubert Massey is an award-winning Kresge Fine Arts Fellow. His distinctive fresco murals grace the halls of such notable Michigan destinations as the Flint Institute of the Arts\, Detroit Athletic Club\, and his alma mater\, Grand Valley State University. He studied at the University of London’s Slade Institute of Fine Arts and later learned the centuries-old fresco technique from former assistants of legendary artist Diego Rivera.

DESCRIPTION:KIA members are invited to join us for the Members’ Preview for our newest exhibition Ink Rhapsody: The Art of Lingnan Masters in Hong Kong before it opens to the public. \n\nPark for free in the South St and Lovell St parking lots on the north & south sides of the KIA’s campus. This event takes place on the first floor of the KIA. Our building has exterior ramps\, automatic doors\, and an elevator.\n5pm: Enjoy light refreshments in the lobby\n5–6:30pm: Ink Rhapsody is open for preview viewing\n6pm: Hear brief remarks from Michelle Hargrave\, Executive Director of the KIA\, in the lobby\nImmediately following\, visit the exhibition gallery for remarks shared by Joy Light\n\nThe exhibition showcases the traditions and innovations of the Lingnan school and the characteristics of southern traditions of Chinese ink art through a refined selection of paintings from the Joy and Timothy Light Collection.
