SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Precarious Living
DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, artist and educator Tom Rice will discuss the evolution of his large-scale drawings and installations that address the global climate crisis. The increasing size and frequency of hurricanes\, tornadoes\, wildfires\, and floods are symptoms of a seismic transition from a relatively stable climate to a new normal. The denial of these signs and the quickening pace of global warming brought on by the extraction\, production\, and burning of fossil fuels are the themes of his work. \nTom Rice is an artist working primarily in drawing\, painting\, and installation. He received a BFA from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia and an MFA from the University of Georgia. Rice is the Jo-Ann and Robert Stewart Professor of Art at Kalamazoo College.

SUMMARY:“Into My Blood”: John Marin’s “Maine Soil” and “Yankee Folk”
DESCRIPTION:During this special offsite lecture\, Dr. James Denison\, Postdoctoral Fellow at Kalamazoo College and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts\, will offer a new interpretation of the artist John Marin’s (1870–1953) work in Maine. Drawing on Marin’s writings\, Denison’s presentation will investigate the artist’s attempted assimilation into what he perceived to be a rustic “Yankee” community on the Maine coast. Denison will relate Marin’s representations of denizens of the Maine coast to contemporaneous notions of whiteness and New England identity\, situating the artist’s fascination with Maine within the long history of ethnic and cultural tourism in the state. \nA native of the DC area and a graduate of Bowdoin College\, James completed his PhD in art history at the University of Michigan\, where he wrote a thesis on the connections between the Stieglitz Circle and racism in the interwar U.S. In 2023 he joined Kalamazoo College and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts as a postdoctoral fellow. \nThis lecture will take place in the Connable Recital Hall in the Light Fine Arts Building at Kalamazoo College\, at the corner of Thompson and Academy Streets. The recital hall is located off of the main lobby\, next to the Dalton Theatre. Parking can be found in the lot behind the building on Thompson Street\, as well as on adjacent streets.

Sit and enjoy\, or wander our exhibitions as you listen! \nRev. Southern is the pastor of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Kalamazoo. A native of Chicago\, he studied theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and earned his Masters in Divinity there in 2010. The Bill Cessna Trio performs jazz music across the Midwest. Their performances pay homage to the musicians who inspire them while also incorporating original music and improvisation.

Reservations will be made on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nVisit the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts on May 17 for a special day-long celebration of Indigenous artmaking\, with a series of free workshops led by Kelly Church (Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi) and David Martin (Pokagon Band of Potawatomi)! Church will lead explorations of black ash basketry\, quilling on birch bark\, and basswood cordage\, while Martin will teach beadworking. Additional programming includes: demonstrations by local artists\, exhibition tours\, storytime for kids and adults\, and a drop-in artmaking activity for guests of all ages. All materials\, as well as breakfast and lunch\, will be provided. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Mies van der Rohe’s Democratic Vision: A Century of Community Engagement at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts
DESCRIPTION:In February 1943\, Mies van der Rohe published his “Museum for a Small City” in Architectural Forum. Architectural historians have long been fascinated with the concept drawings\, but often refer to the plans as never having been realized. And yet\, archival evidence suggests that Mies’ “Museum for a Small City” was indeed realized in 1961\, right here in Kalamazoo. During this ArtBreak\, Dr. Christine Hahn will examine how Mies’ vision came to life in the architectural design of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. \nDr. Christine Hahn is a Professor of Art History and the Art Department Chair at Kalamazoo College. She received both her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has shared her work with local\, national\, and international audiences. She was the recipient of a Fulbright Research Fellowship in 2002\, spending the year in Seoul\, South Korea. Dr. Hahn’s research focuses on 20th century art\, examining how the circulation of art via expatriate artists\, traveling exhibitions\, and the museum space creates multilayered meanings for global audiences.

Expect witty commentary\, surprising facts\, and a healthy dose of friendly competition. \nWhether you’re a lifelong local or just getting to know the area\, this night promises engaging questions about Kalamazoo’s rich cultural history from legends and landmarks to unexpected local gems. SUMMARY:Artist’s Talk with Holly Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Artist Holly Roberts will speak about her body of work created over the past 40 years\, tracing her development as a pioneer in the world of altered photography. Mary Statzer\, Curator of Prints and Photographs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum\, has written\, “Holly Roberts’ contribution to the field of photography is without question. Her work has been added to the canon of experimental ‘creative’ photography in authoritative books on the subject for good reason. Few artists have so successfully combined photography and painting–seamlessly and to great effect–placing the imagined and the ‘real’ on equal footing to describe both lived experiences as well as psychological states and emotion.” \nHolly Roberts’ work has been shown internationally\, and she is represented by galleries across the country. In 2023\, she had a one-person exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Modern Art. She has had five monographs published about her work\, including a comprehensive survey of her work from her exhibit in San Diego called\, “Storyteller: Work by Holly Roberts.” She has received numerous awards and grants\, including two artist’s grants from National Endowments for the Arts. \nA selection of works by Holly Roberts is now on view in the Kirk Newman Art School Commons.

SUMMARY:2025 West Michigan Area Show Awards Night and Members' Preview
DESCRIPTION:The work of West Michigan’s talented artistic community is on view during the annual West Michigan Area Show. Opening to the public on Saturday\, June 14\, this crowd-pleasing annual juried exhibition was carefully curated from more than 300 submitted entries\, ranging from paintings\, prints\, and photos to mosaics\, ceramics\, jewelry\, sculpture\, and mixed-media works. This year’s juror is Detroit artist and teacher Hubert Massey. \nDuring the Awards Ceremony on Friday\, June 13\, over $5\,000 in awards\, including a $1\,000 grand prize\, will be given to recognize excellence in varying media represented in this highly anticipated exhibition.  \nVisit the galleries by Sunday\, July 6 to vote for the People’s Choice Award. The winner of the People’s Choice Award\, sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo\, will be announced during Art Hop on July 11. \nSupport for the West Michigan Area Show is provided by CWS Financial Advisors and David Isaacson in memory of his wife\, Helen Sheridan.
