DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, Elizabeth Start will offer an overview of the history and mission of Kalamazoo’s Connecting Chords Music Festival\, including a description of their 2025 collaboration with K-RESA Education for the Arts to bring San Jose Taiko to town for a public performance on March 25\, coupled with concerts for youth. Carolyn Koebel will join Start to give a short demonstration of taiko drumming. \nA Kalamazoo native\, Start is Executive Director of the Michigan Festival of Sacred Music\, which presents the Connecting Chords Music Festival. She is a cellist with the Kalamazoo and Elgin Symphony Orchestras\, an award-winning composer\, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Kalamazoo Federation of Musicians. She is a member of the Chicago Composers’ Consortium\, the Chicago Musicians Club of Women\, and the International Alliance of Women in Music\, for whom she provides CD reviews.

SUMMARY:Joy Light Lecture Series: Exploring the Power of Visual Art and World-Building
DESCRIPTION:Join interdisciplinary artist and world-builder JooYoung Choi as she shares insights into her studio practice and creative process. Choi is the creator of The Cosmic Womb\, a highly structured imaginary world where she develops narratives that blend autobiographical and fantastic elements. Her work explores themes of identity\, resilience\, transformation\, transracial adoption\, birth family reunion\, immigration\, and systemic oppression. Through painting\, installation\, animation\, video art\, puppet-making\, and sculpture\, she brings complex stories to life in dynamic and thought-provoking ways. \nBorn in Seoul\, South Korea\, in 1982\, Choi immigrated to Concord\, New Hampshire\, in 1983 through adoption. While completing her BFA at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design\, Choi returned to South Korea and reunited with her birth family. Since graduating with an MFA from Lesley University in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, in 2012\, Choi has exhibited in numerous venues across the U.S. Her work has been featured by various media outlets\, and she has received many grants and awards\, including support from the National Endowment for the Arts and Artadia. She has participated in numerous residencies to expand her artistic vision. \nA free reception with the artist begins at 5:30 PM\, and the lecture will begin at 6:00.

SUMMARY:The Garden of Courage and Love Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Garden of Courage and Love is an ongoing artist project by JooYoung Choi where participants create flowers representing people who have shown them unconditional love. These flowers will be added to a growing garden that has been exhibited in multiple installations. Participants will create two larger flowers—one to take home and one to donate to the garden—and three small practice flowers under the guidance of Choi.  \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will have created three practice flowers (they can keep or donate the practice flowers) and two larger flowers—one to keep and one to donate. These meaningful creations will join the Garden of Courage and Love\, reflecting each participant’s creativity and honoring the people they cherish. \nParticipants must be 9 years old or older. Caregivers must be 18 years old or older and must stay with their children at all times. Adults will need to assist their children during the workshop with staple guns\, glue guns\, sharp scissors\, and other tools. \nThe workshop is limited to 20 people. Cost: $15 per adult (18+ years old) and $10 per student (9-17 years old).

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Tiny Dancers: Puppets from Around the World
DESCRIPTION:In this virtual ArtBreak\, explore the art of puppetry with Bradford Clark\, Professor of Theatre at Bowling Green State University. With a strong emphasis in puppetry\, Clark has visited collections\, studied with or interviewed artists\, and attended conferences\, festivals\, and theatrical performances in India\, Vietnam\, Laos\, Indonesia\, Japan\, China\, Taiwan\, the Czech Republic\, Germany\, Austria and France. At Atlanta’s Center for Puppetry Arts\, he served as curator for the Worlds of Puppetry Museum. There he helped conceptualize extensive galleries dedicated to both the Center’s extensive global collection and the largest collection of Jim Henson’s classic puppets in the United States.  \nClark has written\, directed\, and designed several original puppet productions\, including Monkey Storms Heaven\, Pictures at an Exhibition\, Frankenstein\, and The Magnificent Baron Munchausen. He has directed and designed for three productions of The Tempest that were first conceptualized in collaboration with his teachers in Bali\, Indonesia\, maskmaker Ida Bagus Anom and musician Anak Agung Raka Cameng. He co-authored the chapter “Punch and Judy” in the Greenwood Press book Fools in Popular Culture and has published articles and book reviews in The Asian Theatre Journal\, Puppetry International\, Theatre Design & Technology\, Puppetry Yearbook\, and The Puppetry Journal. \nThis virtual talk will include a consideration of the work of Ray Harryhausen. DESCRIPTION:Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers is proud to be in collaboration with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra for a unique offering of music and movement titled Sound in Motion. Sound in Motion will include new choreographic works by Marisa Bianan\, the recently appointed Artistic Director\, along with a selection from the Wellspring repertoire choreographed by founder Cori Terry. The program will feature exhilarating choreography to Philip Glass\, Lou Harrison\, and Paul Hindemith compositions\, as well as music from Stephan Koncz and Maurice Ravel. Sound in Motion will take place on Sunday\, April 27 at 3 p.m. in the Dalton Recital Hall\, located on the WMU campus at 1300 Theatre Drive.   \nDuring this special offsite ArtBreak event\, Wellspring warmly invites you to the Cori Terry Theatre for an exclusive glimpse into their preparations for this collaboration. Join us for an intimate open rehearsal with the dancers\, followed by a ten-minute Q&A session with both the dancers and the Wellspring/KSO administrative teams. \nThe Cori Terry Theatre\, formerly known as the Wellspring Theatre\, is located on the second floor of the Epic Center at 359 S. DESCRIPTION:Shop a selection of more than 100 art tiles crafted in Ann Arbor\, with many one of-a-kind designs. At 1pm\, hear from special guest Nawal Motawi\, who will talk about the art and science of producing tiles and their latest work. Many tiles will be offered including current\, prototypes and rarities. \nAbout Motawi Tileworks: \nMotawi Tileworks is a ceramics studio in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, where we craft art tile with heart and history. Our handcrafted ceramic tiles can be found in our gallery\, online\, and in shops across the country. We also design and create large-scale tile installations for homes and public spaces—think fireplace facades\, kitchen backsplashes\, bathrooms\, and hospitality feature walls\, all made to order with care. Nawal Motawi\, our founder and artistic director\, started making tiles in her garage after studying at the University of Michigan’s Stamps School of Art & Design. Inspired by historic tilework\, she honed her craft\, selling pieces at the local farmers market before launching The Tileworks in 1992. Through years of experimentation\, reading\, and a passion for the process\, she built a company that celebrates artistry and craftsmanship. \nToday\, Motawi Tileworks employs over 40 people and is recognized for its progressive business practices\, including Toyota Business Practices\, lean manufacturing\, and open-book management. We were honored to be named a Small Giant by Forbes—a distinction for companies that prioritize excellence over mere expansion. \nAt The Tileworks\, we believe in making beautiful things and fostering a workplace where creativity thrives. The nine-month residency is designed for aspiring artists who want to grow and strengthen their art practice in a supportive community\, with access to professional studio facilities and guidance.
