SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Virtual Artist’s Talk with Leslie Barlow
DESCRIPTION:During this virtual ArtBreak\, learn about visual artist Leslie Barlow\, whose painting Atquezali\, At Indigenous Roots is featured in the ongoing KIA exhibition Legendary Voices: Art for the Next Century. Barlow’s colorful\, life-size oil paintings serve as both monuments to community members and explorations into the ways in which race entangles the intimate spheres of love\, family\, and friendship. For Barlow\, art and art making are both healing and liberatory through the power of representation\, witnessing\, and storytelling.  \nBarlow received her BFA in 2011 from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and her MFA in 2016 from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. In 2021\, she was awarded the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship\, and in 2019 she was awarded both the McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship and the 20/20 Springboard Fellowship. Collaboration is integral to Barlow’s studio practice. She leads the Public Functionary Studio Program for emerging artists\, and she worked with other organizers and artists to develop the MidWest Mixed Conference\, which then grew into the organization MidWest Mosaic. In response to the murder of George Floyd\, she helped start the collective Creatives after Curfew. She is also the founder and producer of ConFluence\, providing a space for BIPOC art and science fiction lovers to come together.

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: Artist’s Talk with Kelly Church
DESCRIPTION:Meet artist Kelly Church\, an Ottawa/Pottawatomi black ash basket maker\, fiber artist\, educator\, activist\, and culture keeper. A member of the Gun Lake Band in Michigan and descendent of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Ojibwe\, she comes from an unbroken line of black ash basket makers and from the largest black ash weaving family in the Great Lakes region.  \nThrough her distinctive artwork and in workshops led across the country\, Church advocates for the survival of Indigenous cultural traditions and teaches about the black ash tree. The tree is central to the traditions of many Native American and First Nations tribes and critically endangered by the invasive Emerald Ash Borer beetle.  \nShe has been named a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow\, has earned a Native Arts and Cultures Foundation’s National Artist Fellowship\, and has been a four-time Artist Leadership Program participant with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Her black ash piece Every Dawn is a New Day\, a new work acquired by the KIA in 2024\, is on view in the Legendary Voices exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:by Shonda Buchanan \nThis powerful\, deeply personal narrative explores Buchanan’s complex identity. She reflects on the trauma\, resilience\, and strength passed down through generations\, as well as the tensions and misunderstandings she encountered due to her mixed heritage. Throughout\, she weaves in stories of her ancestors\, shedding light on the hidden and painful history of African and Indigenous people in America. The author explores a range of heavy topics in relation to her family life in Kalamazoo and the surrounding area therefore people and places are mentioned by name. From the author’s note\, “I introduce social\, racial\, and cultural issues and explore their implications in relation to my family. This is not a scholarly book. It is a story\, and I do not mean to offend anyone with it.” Discussion will connect themes in the memoir with pieces from Indigenous artists currently on view.

SUMMARY:Richard Phillips: Strokes of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Detroit artist Richard Phillips started painting while in prison with a mail order watercolor set: landscapes\, portraits of famous people\, jazz musicians\, and more\, eventually creating over 400 paintings. \nArrested in 1971 for a murder he didn’t commit\, Phillips was in prison for 46 years. Creating art enabled him to persist and deal with the injustice of his situation. “I didn’t actually think I’d ever be free again. This art is what I did to stay sane\,” Phillips said. “I could get off into one of my paintings and just be in there for hours.” Today\, collectors and viewers alike appreciate the beauty he created throughout those long decades. \nPart of the Kalamazoo Art League Lecture Series \nThis event is a rescheduled presentation and will be free and open to the public. No registration required.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Tejer
DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of Wellspring’s annual RADFest\, hear from this year’s RADicle Resident! Puerto Rican movement artist Lourdes del Mar Santiago Lebrón will discuss their new work\, Tejer\, inspired by the process of weaving. They observe\, “Tejido (weaving) relies on pattern making and repetition; the practice\, much like dance\, requires patience\, consistency\, and practice. The ephemerality of dance experiences can be exemplified by tejido\, as loop stitches are never perfect and can be similar but never exactly the same.” Their work explores the ways their ancestors have actively connected them to land through patterns of repetitive\, consistent care\, and how these patterns exist\, merge\, and change within them as a part of an ongoing lineage.  \nLourdes del Mar aims to create artistic explorations that heighten the senses\, provoke inquisition\, and demand attention. As a Queer Latine woman\, they are committed to making art that is unapologetic\, ideally aiding to create a world in which people think longer\, feel harder\, and experience life without hesitation. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University\, they are currently pursuing their MFA at Washington University in St. Louis. \nThe RADicle Residency is a collaborative nature-based residency between Wellspring/Cori Terry and Dancers’ RADFest program and The Croft of Horton Bay\, MI.

DESCRIPTION:Sourced from the ‘Zoo opens to the public in conjunction with Art Hop on Friday\, March 7 from 5–8pm.  \nSourced from the ‘Zoo is a community-wide exhibition celebrating the vibrancy and diversity of Kalamazoo and its residents. This dynamic\, crowdsourced exhibition is a platform for everyone in Kalamazoo to participate\, creating a shared space for commemoration\, celebration\, and meaningful connections. The exhibition will be on view at the KIA through Sunday\, June 1\, 2025. \nAbout Sourced from the ‘Zoo: This exciting crowdsourced exhibition was designed to foster a deeper sense of belonging and communal connection and invites participants to commemorate and celebrate their unique stories within a shared space. The exhibition features ten themes: Books\, Literature\, and Literacy; Climate and the Environment; The Curious and Unconventional; Dance and Movement; Equity and Social Justice; Glass and Glass-making; Life in Kalamazoo after the Pandemic; Music and Musical Instruments; People and Places in Kalamazoo; and Self-care and Well-being. These themes represent the diverse passions and experiences that make Kalamazoo such a rich and dynamic place to live.  \nIn addition to the KIA\, submissions from the community will be featured at other venues\, including the KVCC Center for New Media [on view March 6-April 25\, 2025]\, Black Arts and Cultural Center [on view April 2025]\, Glass Art Kalamazoo [on view March 6-April 21]\, and Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo [on view March 7-April 25\, 2025]. Sourced from the ‘Zoo will also feature programmatic partners including the Kalamazoo Valley Museum\, Kalamazoo Public Library (Central)\, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra\, and Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers\, among other community collaborations.

DESCRIPTION:Thinking of taking a class at the KIA? “Make it and take it all in one night” and join us for the School’s Hands On event as it returns during Art Hop on Friday\, March 7 from 6 to 9pm! This fun\, fast-paced art making evening features a range of activities and creative projects highlighting different media students can experience in the Kirk Newman Art School. \nBring your friends and family to create a ceramic cup or raku fired vessel\, hand print a tea towel\, weld a metal garden art piece\, produce a photogram\, and more. 15 different projects will be available to enjoy. Admission to the event and some projects are free while others require nominal tickets to cover the costs of materials. Professor Abbas Daneshvari is the former Chair of the Department of Art and Professor of Art History at California State University\, Los Angeles. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Connecting Chords / Engaging Drums
DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, Elizabeth Start will offer an overview of the history and mission of Kalamazoo’s Connecting Chords Music Festival\, including a description of their 2025 collaboration with K-RESA Education for the Arts to bring San Jose Taiko to town for a public performance on March 25\, coupled with concerts for youth. Carolyn Koebel will join Start to give a short demonstration of taiko drumming. \nA Kalamazoo native\, Start is Executive Director of the Michigan Festival of Sacred Music\, which presents the Connecting Chords Music Festival. She is a cellist with the Kalamazoo and Elgin Symphony Orchestras\, an award-winning composer\, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Kalamazoo Federation of Musicians. She is a member of the Chicago Composers’ Consortium\, the Chicago Musicians Club of Women\, and the International Alliance of Women in Music\, for whom she provides CD reviews.
