SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Let Freedom Swing: Jazz Music in American Culture
DESCRIPTION:Led by Rev. Millard Southern\, this ArtBreak will feature an interactive\, jazz-style conversation on topics such as race\, culture\, and religion with some of Kalamazoo’s most-sought after and in-demand jazz musicians. Together they will discuss and demonstrate many of the core characteristics of jazz music\, as well as the genre’s powerful potential for bringing communities together. \nRev. Southern is the pastor of Allen Chapel AME Church in Kalamazoo\, and he also teaches courses in the Shared Passages program at Kalamazoo College. A native of Chicago\, he studied theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and earned his Masters in Divinity there in 2010. He is a third-generation pastor\, an avid jazz fan\, and a musician in his own right. \nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Glass Art
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about glass art with Ekin Deniz Aytac and Joshua Davids! A husband-and-wife team of artists hailing from Edremit\, Turkey\, and Colorado respectively\, Aytac and Davids draw from a unique combination of culture\, heritage\, and experience to develop new works of glass art. They have lived\, traveled\, and created artwork together since 2014.  \nAytac began working with glass in Istanbul\, Turkey\, before studying in the Czech Republic and eventually attending the graduate program at West Texas A&M University. Davids discovered glass at the same university while seeking a master’s degree in the fine arts. Both artists fell in love with the glass due to its physical nature and the team aspect of creating with the material\, as well as its capacity to interact with light and space. In 2015\, the couple moved to Kalamazoo to manage Glass Art Kalamazoo\, a nonprofit public access glass studio. There they taught classes\, created events and demonstrations\, and honed their skills in the hot shop before taking their practice independent in 2020. Their work is exhibited in internationally renowned galleries\, museums\, and private collections around the world.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion: The Samurai’s Garden
DESCRIPTION:by Gail Tsukiyama \nSet in the late 1930s during the Second Sino-Japanese war\, a young Chinese man retreats to a serene coastal village in Japan to recover from tuberculosis. While healing\, Stephen is cared for by a steward named Matsu whose story of loss and love intrigues Stephen. The two bond over the tranquil art of gardening. Through Matsu\, Stephen meets Sachi\, a beautiful woman who lives in a nearby village and suffers from leprosy which has left her scarred and lonely. She finds solace in her relationship with both Matsu and eventually Stephen. As their pasts are revealed\, Stephen reflects on his own life and family and leaves the village with a renewed hope in the strength of the human spirit.

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: Party to a Secret: Exploring the Arts through  Betty Beeby’s Lithographs
DESCRIPTION:Together with the Ladies’ Library Association\, we invite you to this multidisciplinary presentation in connection to Michigan artist Betty Beeby. Through the visual arts\, music\, and dance\, we will examine Beeby’s long-reaching artistic influence\, inspired by the story of the Petersboro Letters. When letters are unearthed in the family barn detailing a long-lost relationship between mother and son in the early 1900s\, Beeby is inspired to create lithographs highlighting significant moments in their correspondence. This story would go on to create a domino effect of inspiration\, represented not only in visual art but also rendered powerfully through music and dance. We are excited to share more about the artist\, her work\, and the art that others have been inspired to create from this compelling story. Refreshments will be provided by the Ladies’ Library Association. \nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. Recordings of select past events are available on YouTube as well. No registration is necessary in order to join in virtually.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Legendary Artist’s Talk: James Palmore
DESCRIPTION:Get to know local artist James C. Palmore\, who has long been a pillar of the fine and performing arts communities in Kalamazoo. Palmore’s interest in the arts was first sparked when he was a student in the Kalamazoo Public School system. In the 1970s\, he took art classes at Kalamazoo Valley Community College before going on to teach arts and crafts for the Parks and Recreation Department\, retiring in 2003 as the Youth Program Coordinator. Palmore was a co-founder of the Civic Black Theatre and also worked with Gray & Gray Theatrical Production in Detroit. He co-founded the Black Arts & Cultural Center in 1986 and served in multiple key capacities there for more than 25 years. Over a span of decades\, Palmore has worked extensively with the Farm Research Cooperative; the NAACP’s Afro-Academic\, Cultural\, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) program; Kalamazoo Valley Community College; and the Northside Association for Community Development.  \nOriginally commissioned by the Douglass Community Association\, Palmore’s striking portrait of jazz singer Abbey Lincoln is included in the KIA’s ongoing Legendary Voices exhibition. Join us to learn more about this painting\, Palmore’s larger body of work\, and his life in the arts. \nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. DESCRIPTION:Update: Due to inclement weather\, this event is canceled and will be rescheduled. \nWe will gather in the Joy Light Gallery to observe a trio of figures representing Bixia Yuanjun and Guanyin. Sometimes conflated with one another\, these two Chinese goddesses are both associated with compassion\, protection\, and fertility. They differ\, however\, in their stories of origin and the ways in which they have historically been depicted in art. Together\, we will examine renderings of these goddesses in bronze\, porcelain\, and jade.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Exploring Common Myths about the Samurai
DESCRIPTION:The remarkable success of the 2024 television series Shogun is only the latest example of popular fascination with Japan’s historical warriors\, the samurai. Despite all this attention\, the samurai remain puzzling for many people: products of both history and myth who have been repeatedly reinvented and used to explain everything from Japanese business practices to the purported uniqueness of Japanese baseball. Who were these warriors? Drawing examples from the complicated history of the samurai\, this talk will answer that question and explore why they have become such an enduring and popular symbol of Japan. \nDr. Dennis J. Frost is the Wen Chao Chen Professor of East Asian Social Sciences at Kalamazoo College\, where he teaches courses on the entire scope of premodern\, modern\, and contemporary East Asian history. He received his Ph.D. in 2007 from Columbia University\, specializing in modern Japanese history. He has written widely on Japanese history\, including his books Seeing Stars: Sports Celebrity\, Identity\, and Body Culture in Modern Japan\, and More Than Medals: A History of the Paralympics and Disability Sports in Postwar Japan. \nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. Rose \nWith alternating storylines set in early 1900s Sweden and present-day New York City\, this historical fiction book considers the enduring power of Hilma af Klint’s art. Hilma\, along with four female friends\, collectively known as The Five\, gather together on Friday nights to perform seances in the hopes of receiving mystic visions. These visions would be messages from spirits who would help guide their artistic potential. In the present day\, Eben Elliott is bringing the Hilma af Klint art exhibition to The Guggenheim Museum.  During this process\, Eben begins to uncover questions about The Five and the art they created. As Eben continues his research he puts his professional and personal life at risk. Threads of history\, passion\, and destiny are woven together in this story that explores art\, creativity\, and the power of relationships.
