DESCRIPTION:Eric Souther (he/him) is an Assistant Professor of Kinetic Imaging in the Gwen Frostic School of Art at Western Michigan University. During this ArtBreak lecture\, he will present a short overview of his experimental media art practice\, covering the topics of artificial intelligence\, deep time\, material agency\, and his recent collaborative work with Benjamin Rosenthal: “Body-oddy-oddy: Destabilizing the Surveilling of Queer Bodies\,” which won the Digital Art Category in last year’s ArtPrize In Grand Rapids. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: An Interartistic Dialogue Between Visual Poetry and Visual Art
DESCRIPTION:Hedy Habra is a poet\, artist\, and essayist. During this ArtBreak\, she will discuss and read selections from her recently-published poetry collection\, Or Did You Ever See the Other Side? (Press 53\, 2023). The ekphrastic poems in this volume focus on the feminine and are mainly inspired by contemporary and surrealist women artists from different ethnicities and nationalities. Most of the poems explore women’s voices as well as social and political issues. Or Did You Ever See the Other Side? recently won the 2024 International Poetry Book Award and was a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Book Award. \nHabra has authored four collections of poetry. The Taste of the Earth won the Silver Nautilus Book Award\, Tea in Heliopolis won the USA Best Book Award\, and Under Brushstrokes was an International Book Award finalist. Her story collection\, Flying Carpets\, won the Arab American Book Award’s Honorable Mention. Her book of criticism is Mundos alternos y artísticos en Vargas Llosa. A twenty-one-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net\, her multilingual work appears in numerous journals and anthologies. \nOr Did You Ever See the Other Side? is available for purchase now in the KIA’s Gallery Shop! SUMMARY:Gallery Gathering: Robert Seldon Duncanson’s Heart of the Andes and Jerry Kearns’ Right of Way\, 1875-1922
DESCRIPTION:The KIA is thrilled to announce Gallery Gatherings\, a pilot series for adult audiences! During this short monthly program\, participants will engage with ongoing exhibitions\, gathering for close observation and lightly moderated discussions of selected artworks on view in our galleries. This program is free with the cost of admission. Preregistration is encouraged. \nDuring this Gallery Gathering\, immerse yourself in two dramatic American landscapes rendered by Robert Seldon Duncanson and Jerry Kearns. Their respective paintings\, Heart of the Andes (1871) and Right of Way\, 1875-1922 (1992)\, are presented together in the exhibition Legendary: New Perspectives on the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Collection. Participants will examine the two paintings in conversation with one another. How did these two artists imagine the physical landscape of America\, as well as its human inhabitants\, in large-scale paintings created more than a century apart?

DESCRIPTION:Dell Darnell (they/them) is the founder of The Dapper Hammer and is a carpenter and woodworking educator. Darnell started The Dapper Hammer\, Michigan’s first trans-owned teaching workshop\, several years ago to chase a dream of supporting the community with their hands\, building beautiful things\, and sharing their passion of teaching people who are not traditionally represented in the trades – including girls\, youth\, women\, trans\, and non-binary folks. Darnell loves the energy and empowerment that comes from a space designed for inclusivity and diversity – especially when it’s a niche that has historically been exclusive of so many.  \nWhen they are not swinging a hammer\, Darnell is the Director of Services for OutFront Kalamazoo and oversees all DEI training\, two housing programs\, and all mental\, physical\, and social health services. \nDarnell holds a master’s degree in International Non-Profit Administration from Western Michigan University and has been the recipient of several awards for their work advancing the movement for justice and equality for the LGBTQ+ community. \nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. Panelists will include local arts educators and leaders who will share insights based on their experiences in their fields. There will be opportunities to network with other artists\, get feedback on your application materials\, and learn more about what both the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts have to offer! SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Let Freedom Swing: Jazz Music in American Culture
DESCRIPTION:Led by Rev. Millard Southern\, this ArtBreak will feature an interactive\, jazz-style conversation on topics such as race\, culture\, and religion with some of Kalamazoo’s most-sought after and in-demand jazz musicians. Together they will discuss and demonstrate many of the core characteristics of jazz music\, as well as the genre’s powerful potential for bringing communities together. \nRev. Southern is the pastor of Allen Chapel AME Church in Kalamazoo\, and he also teaches courses in the Shared Passages program at Kalamazoo College. A native of Chicago\, he studied theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and earned his Masters in Divinity there in 2010. He is a third-generation pastor\, an avid jazz fan\, and a musician in his own right. \nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. Recordings of select past events are available on YouTube as well. No registration is necessary in order to join in virtually.

DESCRIPTION:The KIA’s history is rich with remarkable men and women who\, through their sheer grit and determination\, guided us from a rented room in the YWCA to the “Best Art Institute between Detroit and Chicago.”  \nJim Carter\, past president of the board of directors and current docent\, will present KIA history in a series of vignettes about the individuals\, often women\, who led this journey\, and the events which defined us. Learn about Blanche Hull\, the first board president\, and her vision for the art center. Meet  our first patron\, Anna Louise Raymond. Hear about the origin of the “Clothesline Art Show.” Revisit some of the blockbuster exhibitions from our past.      \nDr. Carter is a retired physician who had a clinical practice of Internal Medicine in Kalamazoo for 36 years\, also serving as an Associate Professor for MSU-CHM and Program Director of Internal Medicine for MSU-KCMS. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Glass Art
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about glass art with Ekin Deniz Aytac and Joshua Davids! A husband-and-wife team of artists hailing from Edremit\, Turkey\, and Colorado respectively\, Aytac and Davids draw from a unique combination of culture\, heritage\, and experience to develop new works of glass art. They have lived\, traveled\, and created artwork together since 2014.  \nAytac began working with glass in Istanbul\, Turkey\, before studying in the Czech Republic and eventually attending the graduate program at West Texas A&M University. Davids discovered glass at the same university while seeking a master’s degree in the fine arts. Both artists fell in love with the glass due to its physical nature and the team aspect of creating with the material\, as well as its capacity to interact with light and space. In 2015\, the couple moved to Kalamazoo to manage Glass Art Kalamazoo\, a nonprofit public access glass studio. There they taught classes\, created events and demonstrations\, and honed their skills in the hot shop before taking their practice independent in 2020. Their work is exhibited in internationally renowned galleries\, museums\, and private collections around the world.
