DESCRIPTION:For nearly two decades\, Preston Singletary has straddled two unique cultures\, melding his Tlingit ancestry with the dynamism of the Studio Glass Movement. In the process\, he has created an extraordinarily distinctive and powerful body of work that depicts cultural and historical images in richly detailed\, beautifully hued glass. Singletary has translated the visual vocabulary of patterns\, narratives\, and systems of Native woodcarving and painted art into glass\, a material historically associated with Native peoples through an extensive network of trading routes. \nSave the date for the KIA’s collaboration with Glass Art Kalamazoo on August 10\, as we celebrate Clearly Indigenous with an artists’ exchange\, live demonstrations\, and a family-friendly hands-on exploration of creating glass art! \n\n\n\nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, meet local artists Richard Aardsma and Olivia Stier\, whose works are featured in the 2024 West Michigan Area Show! \nRichard Aardsma finds inspiration for his photomontages in the evolution of the photographic still life in modern and postmodern art. Thought-provoking compositions such as Still Life with Camera convey narrative meaning through the juxtaposition of elements. Aardsma seeks to create images that combine traditional aesthetics and conceptual art. \nOlivia Stier is a multimedia artist whose work explores grief\, memory\, and the spaces where the two intersect. Her work in portraiture offers an intimate look into the feelings of isolation\, loneliness\, and detachment that come from grieving. Stier’s print An Offering was selected for this year’s Southwest Michigan Printmakers’ Excellence in Printmaking Award.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a daylong celebration of the exhibition Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass\, on view now at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts! Special guests include curator Dr. Letitia Chambers as well as glass artists Dan Friday (Lummi) and Carol Lujan (Diné)\, whose works are included in the exhibition.  \nThe morning session will take place at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts from 9 AM to 1:00 PM and will include a keynote address and gallery walkthrough with Dr. Chambers\, artists’ talks by Friday and Lujan\, and a panel discussion led by Rehema Barber\, Director of Curatorial Affairs.  \nFrom 3:30 to 6:00 PM\, we will gather at Glass Art Kalamazoo for a live demonstration by Dan Friday and Carol Lujan\, as well as a hands-on fused glass project led by GAK staff. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Gun Lake Tribal Historic Preservation and Curation
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Rupe is the Archives/Collections Coordinator for the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians (Gun Lake Tribe). She began her career with the Gun Lake Tribe in the spring of 2021. In addition to assisting in establishing tribal archives and collections\, Rupe has also worked with the Tribe in the areas of programming\, digital archive website development\, community collaboration and outreach\, and exhibitions\, including the Kalamazoo Nature Center’s Roots of Wisdom exhibition. She has a BS in Travel/Tourism and Anthropology from Western Michigan University\, and she is currently completing her Graduate Certificate in Cultural and Environmental Heritage Management and her MA in Public History through her undergraduate institution.  \nDuring this talk\, Rupe will discuss her work with the Tribal Historic Preservation Office for the Gun Lake Tribe\, with a specific focus on the Archives/Collection program and on how her office is working towards collaborative curation with outside institutions.

DESCRIPTION:The KIA is thrilled to announce Gallery Gatherings\, a pilot series for adult audiences! During this short monthly program\, participants will engage with ongoing exhibitions\, gathering for close observation and lightly moderated discussions of selected artworks on view in our galleries. This program is free with the cost of admission. Preregistration is encouraged. \nOur inaugural Gallery Gathering will focus on Diptych\, by Fritz Scholder. An enrolled member of the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians\, Scholder was an interdisciplinary artist and educator who sought to deconstruct stereotypes of Indigenous American identities and artistic styles with works that embraced the influences of abstraction\, expressionism\, and pop art. Scholder’s Diptych is one of five artworks by Indigenous American artists that are newly on loan to the KIA from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

DESCRIPTION:Eric Souther (he/him) is an Assistant Professor of Kinetic Imaging in the Gwen Frostic School of Art at Western Michigan University. During this ArtBreak lecture\, he will present a short overview of his experimental media art practice\, covering the topics of artificial intelligence\, deep time\, material agency\, and his recent collaborative work with Benjamin Rosenthal: “Body-oddy-oddy: Destabilizing the Surveilling of Queer Bodies\,” which won the Digital Art Category in last year’s ArtPrize In Grand Rapids. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: An Interartistic Dialogue Between Visual Poetry and Visual Art
DESCRIPTION:Hedy Habra is a poet\, artist\, and essayist. During this ArtBreak\, she will discuss and read selections from her recently-published poetry collection\, Or Did You Ever See the Other Side? (Press 53\, 2023). The ekphrastic poems in this volume focus on the feminine and are mainly inspired by contemporary and surrealist women artists from different ethnicities and nationalities. Most of the poems explore women’s voices as well as social and political issues. Or Did You Ever See the Other Side? recently won the 2024 International Poetry Book Award and was a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Book Award. \nHabra has authored four collections of poetry. The Taste of the Earth won the Silver Nautilus Book Award\, Tea in Heliopolis won the USA Best Book Award\, and Under Brushstrokes was an International Book Award finalist. Her story collection\, Flying Carpets\, won the Arab American Book Award’s Honorable Mention. Her book of criticism is Mundos alternos y artísticos en Vargas Llosa. A twenty-one-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net\, her multilingual work appears in numerous journals and anthologies. \nOr Did You Ever See the Other Side? is available for purchase now in the KIA’s Gallery Shop! SUMMARY:South Street Print Fest: The KIA’s Steamroller Printmaking Event
DESCRIPTION:This first-ever event for the KIA celebrates the art of printmaking and welcomes the community to witness how a large steamroller can be used as a printing press to produce vibrant\, large-scale prints from relief carvings. \nDuring the event\, Kirk Newman Art School faculty and students will be printing new works in the KIA’s South Street parking lot and will be assisting community printmakers throughout the day. Community members can also enjoy free\, hands-on printmaking demos throughout the day in silkscreen\, etching\, woodblock\, and more. \nEvent will run from 9am to 6pm on Saturday\, September 28 rain or shine. SUMMARY:Gallery Gathering: Robert Seldon Duncanson’s Heart of the Andes and Jerry Kearns’ Right of Way\, 1875-1922
DESCRIPTION:The KIA is thrilled to announce Gallery Gatherings\, a pilot series for adult audiences! During this short monthly program\, participants will engage with ongoing exhibitions\, gathering for close observation and lightly moderated discussions of selected artworks on view in our galleries. This program is free with the cost of admission. Preregistration is encouraged. \nDuring this Gallery Gathering\, immerse yourself in two dramatic American landscapes rendered by Robert Seldon Duncanson and Jerry Kearns. Their respective paintings\, Heart of the Andes (1871) and Right of Way\, 1875-1922 (1992)\, are presented together in the exhibition Legendary: New Perspectives on the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Collection. Participants will examine the two paintings in conversation with one another. How did these two artists imagine the physical landscape of America\, as well as its human inhabitants\, in large-scale paintings created more than a century apart?

DESCRIPTION:Dell Darnell (they/them) is the founder of The Dapper Hammer and is a carpenter and woodworking educator. Darnell started The Dapper Hammer\, Michigan’s first trans-owned teaching workshop\, several years ago to chase a dream of supporting the community with their hands\, building beautiful things\, and sharing their passion of teaching people who are not traditionally represented in the trades – including girls\, youth\, women\, trans\, and non-binary folks. Darnell loves the energy and empowerment that comes from a space designed for inclusivity and diversity – especially when it’s a niche that has historically been exclusive of so many.  \nWhen they are not swinging a hammer\, Darnell is the Director of Services for OutFront Kalamazoo and oversees all DEI training\, two housing programs\, and all mental\, physical\, and social health services. \nDarnell holds a master’s degree in International Non-Profit Administration from Western Michigan University and has been the recipient of several awards for their work advancing the movement for justice and equality for the LGBTQ+ community. \nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. The film explores themes of family\, connection\, self-discovery\, love\, and loss while celebrating Mexican culture and beloved traditions like Día de Muertos. Popcorn and other refreshments will be provided.
