SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Upjohn’s Building 88
DESCRIPTION:In 1961\, construction was completed on two remarkable structures in Kalamazoo\, both designed by the architectural firm Skidmore\, Owings & Merrill. One was the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts\, based on a design by architect Mies van der Rohe and expanded in 1994 to become the structure we occupy today. The other was the Upjohn Company’s Building 88\, designed by Bruce Graham and razed in 2007. \nDuring this ArtBreak talk\, learn more about the innovative design elements that made Building 88 unique with Dr. Christine Hahn\, Professor of Art History at Kalamazoo College. Dr. Hahn argues that Building 88 represents one of the country’s earliest examples of the open office movement. DESCRIPTION:Join us in observing Memorial Day with a screening of the 1994 film Maya Lin: A Strong\, Clear Vision.This Academy Award-winning documentary tells the story of architect-sculptor Maya Lin\, whose design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was selected from over a thousand submissions when she was a 21-year-old student at Yale University. The film explores the controversy that arose surrounding the design of the monument as well as its creator herself\, a young\, Chinese-American woman who stood her ground in the face of widespread criticism. Dedicated on Veteran’s Day in 1982\, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has become one of the world’s most-visited memorials.  \nMaya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision was written and directed by Frieda Lee Mock and produced by Frieda Lee Mock and Terry Sanders. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Simon Pokagon’s Birch Bark Stories
DESCRIPTION:Originally published in 1893 and 1901\, Simon Pokagon’s birch bark stories were printed on thinly peeled and elegantly bound birch bark. In Dr. Blaire Morseau’s 2023 book\, As Sacred to Us: Simon Pokagon’s Birch Bark Stories in Their Contexts\, these rare booklets are reprinted with new essays that set the stories in cultural\, linguistic\, historical\, and even geological context. Experts in Native literary traditions\, history\, Algonquian languages\, the Michigan landscape\, and materials conservation illuminate the thousands of years of Indigenous knowledge that Pokagon elevated in his stories. \nBlaire Morseau is a citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians\, a beadwork artist\, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies as well as affiliate faculty in American Indian and Indigenous Studies at Michigan State University. Before joining MSU\, she was Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston\, where she served as Interim Director of Native American and Indigenous Studies. SUMMARY:Artful Evening: Blue Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Michigan photographer Emily J. Gómez will share her work in New Cyanotype\, explaining how and why she uses this handmade blueprint process. Through the series Unearthed\, she investigates places where Native American towns in the Southeast and Midwest once prospered and considers what they have become. Her latest series\, titled Cumberland Island: Land\, Water\, Wind\, and Light\, is a collaboration with artists Christa Bowden and Ernesto R. Gómez. Her focus for the project is on the Georgia barrier island’s Native American\, African American\, and Carnegie family histories\, and the island’s impending loss due to rising sea levels. \nGómez earned a BA in Fine Arts Photography from Loyola University Chicago in 1998\, and an MFA with Distinction in Photography from the University of Georgia in 2006. Free general admission on June 15\, 2024.  \n11:00 am to 5:00 pm: Explore the Museum\nUse a gallery guide to learn more about African American artists in the KIA’s collection. \n11:15 am: Art Detectives\nWatch Faith Ringold read her book “Tar Beach” followed by a self-directed community art activity. (The recording will be played multiple times between 11:15 and 11:30 am.) \n11:30 am to 3:00 pm: Silent Family Book Club\nFamilies can borrow children’s books from the Meader Fine Arts Library about Juneteenth\, Black artists and other figures to read together around the museum. Families must return the books by 3:00 pm\, except for KIA members.  \n11:30 am to 4:00 pm: Community Paper Quilt\nFamilies can create paper quilt squares to be added to the community quilt. Squares created in 2024 will be merged with those created in 2023\, to share the rich history of families in West Michigan.  \n1:00 to 2:00 pm: Screening of PBS’s Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom\nA Black man is troubled by the legacy of American slavery and the misuse of Christianity to justify it. He travels throughout Texas and discovers how the Juneteenth holiday reveals a resilient hope that empowered the formerly enslaved and their descendants to fight for freedom in an often unjust society (rated TV-PG).

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist’s talk and live demonstration with Jeffrey Bohl\, whose sculpture Ellie is featured in the 2024 West Michigan Area Show! \nBohl has been creating bronze sculptures for over 16 years\, exhibiting along the way in numerous regional competitions and in several individual shows. He pours most of his bronzes in his own backyard\, using foundry equipment he has designed and built himself. He creates sculptures by assemblage\, first creating various hollow wax forms\, then looking for relationships between those individual shapes and assembling them into compelling larger forms. Bohl tends toward light-hearted figurative work and has been creating animal forms for the last few years. His work is represented by J. Petter Gallery in Saugatuck. \nBe sure to stop by the West Michigan Area Show before June 24 to cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award! DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, meet local artists Vicki Nelson and Michael Pfleghaar\, whose paintings are featured in the 2024 West Michigan Area Show! \nVicki Nelson’s painting The Howards was selected for this year’s Art League Award. As an artist\, Nelson is interested in how humans interact with their environments. In her work\, she seeks to examine and reveal her subjects’ interior experiences. \nMichael Pfleghaar also explores human experience in his work\, but he does so through a focus on non-human objects as revelatory artifacts. She’s a forensic anthropologist\, who is married to her historian husband\, Ike and helps out at her moms’ veterinary clinic. Her daily life has a routine. When Pepper discovers she is connected to the famous reclusive artist Ula Frost whose paintings are rumored to transport the subjects to and from alternate universes\, she’s swept up in a major mystery. Who is Ula Frost? Can her paintings actually transport people? What is Pepper’s role in all of this? Is there an alternate Pepper living a better life? Ultimately this is a meditation on the many paths a person’s life can take and maybe happiness can be found in the life you already have.

SUMMARY:Artful Evening: Indigenous Art and Activism
DESCRIPTION:Seth Thomas Sutton is an Emmy-nominated Métis artist\, scholar\, author\, and activist. He holds Masters degrees in Visual and Critical Studies from Kendall College of Art and Design and is currently chair of the Arts and Humanities Department at Montcalm Community College. Sutton is a member of the Native American Advisory Council at Grand Valley State University and is also the head of the Sugar Council for Montcalm Community College.  \nSutton has contributed to two collaborative documentary film projects for WGVU. In 2017\, the full-length film wiinwaa niizhaasing (We the 7th) was nominated for an Emmy Award\, and in 2021\, the documentary series Shaping Narratives was nominated for two. These projects highlight West Michigan’s vibrant Indigenous communities\, along with their artwork\, lifeways\, social and cultural activism\, and food reclamation. Sutton was among the first Indigenous-based journalists to document and report on the Dakota Access Pipeline protests in Standing Rock. His first full-length publication\, The Deconstruction of Chief Blackhawk: A Critical Analysis of Mascots & the Visual Rhetoric of the Indian\, was published in 2021. \n\n\n\nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. DESCRIPTION:For nearly two decades\, Preston Singletary has straddled two unique cultures\, melding his Tlingit ancestry with the dynamism of the Studio Glass Movement. In the process\, he has created an extraordinarily distinctive and powerful body of work that depicts cultural and historical images in richly detailed\, beautifully hued glass. DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, meet local artists Richard Aardsma and Olivia Stier\, whose works are featured in the 2024 West Michigan Area Show! \nRichard Aardsma finds inspiration for his photomontages in the evolution of the photographic still life in modern and postmodern art. Thought-provoking compositions such as Still Life with Camera convey narrative meaning through the juxtaposition of elements. Aardsma seeks to create images that combine traditional aesthetics and conceptual art. \nOlivia Stier is a multimedia artist whose work explores grief\, memory\, and the spaces where the two intersect. Her work in portraiture offers an intimate look into the feelings of isolation\, loneliness\, and detachment that come from grieving. Stier’s print An Offering was selected for this year’s Southwest Michigan Printmakers’ Excellence in Printmaking Award.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a daylong celebration of the exhibition Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass\, on view now at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts! Special guests include curator Dr. Letitia Chambers as well as glass artists Dan Friday (Lummi) and Carol Lujan (Diné)\, whose works are included in the exhibition.  \nThe morning session will take place at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts from 9 AM to 1:00 PM and will include a keynote address and gallery walkthrough with Dr. Chambers\, artists’ talks by Friday and Lujan\, and a panel discussion led by Rehema Barber\, Director of Curatorial Affairs.  \nFrom 3:30 to 6:00 PM\, we will gather at Glass Art Kalamazoo for a live demonstration by Dan Friday and Carol Lujan\, as well as a hands-on fused glass project led by GAK staff. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Gun Lake Tribal Historic Preservation and Curation
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Rupe is the Archives/Collections Coordinator for the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians (Gun Lake Tribe). She began her career with the Gun Lake Tribe in the spring of 2021. In addition to assisting in establishing tribal archives and collections\, Rupe has also worked with the Tribe in the areas of programming\, digital archive website development\, community collaboration and outreach\, and exhibitions\, including the Kalamazoo Nature Center’s Roots of Wisdom exhibition. She has a BS in Travel/Tourism and Anthropology from Western Michigan University\, and she is currently completing her Graduate Certificate in Cultural and Environmental Heritage Management and her MA in Public History through her undergraduate institution.  \nDuring this talk\, Rupe will discuss her work with the Tribal Historic Preservation Office for the Gun Lake Tribe\, with a specific focus on the Archives/Collection program and on how her office is working towards collaborative curation with outside institutions.
