SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Mies van der Rohe’s Democratic Vision: A Century of Community Engagement at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts
DESCRIPTION:In February 1943\, Mies van der Rohe published his “Museum for a Small City” in Architectural Forum. Architectural historians have long been fascinated with the concept drawings\, but often refer to the plans as never having been realized. And yet\, archival evidence suggests that Mies’ “Museum for a Small City” was indeed realized in 1961\, right here in Kalamazoo. During this ArtBreak\, Dr. Christine Hahn will examine how Mies’ vision came to life in the architectural design of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. \nDr. Christine Hahn is a Professor of Art History and the Art Department Chair at Kalamazoo College. She received both her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has shared her work with local\, national\, and international audiences. She was the recipient of a Fulbright Research Fellowship in 2002\, spending the year in Seoul\, South Korea. Dr. Hahn’s research focuses on 20th century art\, examining how the circulation of art via expatriate artists\, traveling exhibitions\, and the museum space creates multilayered meanings for global audiences.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion: Any Person is the Only Self
DESCRIPTION:by Elisa Gabbert \nEvery life is a unique experience but what commonalities unite us? How can our personal stories be relatable? Books\, music\, art—we may view these differently\, yet we relate to common themes. Gabbert considers how these perceptions influence our understanding in regard to artforms. These 16 essays look at who we are when we read a good book or see interesting art. These essays also grapple with how time and memory influence that experience. Join us to discuss these essays in conversation with themes showcased in Sourced from the ‘Zoo. We will meet in the gallery and look at pieces on display during our discussion.

SUMMARY:Artist’s Talk with Holly Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Artist Holly Roberts will speak about her body of work created over the past 40 years\, tracing her development as a pioneer in the world of altered photography. Mary Statzer\, Curator of Prints and Photographs at the University of New Mexico Art Museum\, has written\, “Holly Roberts’ contribution to the field of photography is without question. Her work has been added to the canon of experimental ‘creative’ photography in authoritative books on the subject for good reason. Few artists have so successfully combined photography and painting–seamlessly and to great effect–placing the imagined and the ‘real’ on equal footing to describe both lived experiences as well as psychological states and emotion.” \nHolly Roberts’ work has been shown internationally\, and she is represented by galleries across the country. In 2023\, she had a one-person exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Modern Art. She has had five monographs published about her work\, including a comprehensive survey of her work from her exhibit in San Diego called\, “Storyteller: Work by Holly Roberts.” She has received numerous awards and grants\, including two artist’s grants from National Endowments for the Arts. \nA selection of works by Holly Roberts is now on view in the Kirk Newman Art School Commons.

SUMMARY:Gallery Shop Artist Feature: Ten26 Studio - Danielle Vincent
DESCRIPTION:During select Free Thursdays at the KIA\, we’re highlighting artists from the Gallery Shop. On July 31\, join us in the Gallery Shop as Danielle Vincent shares her handmade jewelry. \nAbout Ten26 Studio: \n“I’ve been making jewelry for nearly 20 years\, drawn to the challenge (and magic) of building forms by hand. Soldering is my happy place\, and I love turning raw metal into one-of-a-kind pieces that feel personal and intentional. I teach metalsmithing at the KIA and have spent over a decade showing my work at professional juried art shows across the country. Every piece I create is a little celebration of detail\, process\, and individuality—made to be worn\, loved\, and lived in. \nI’m drawn to unusual forms—whether it’s the curve of a petal\, the jagged edge of stone\, or the repeating lines in architecture. Organic or structural\, these shapes spark ideas that evolve into jewelry with texture\, movement\, and a story.\nNature definitely plays a big role in my work\, but it’s the details—the unexpected geometry\, the way light hits a surface\, the patterns hiding in plain sight—that really get me going. I translate those moments into pieces that feel both grounded and a little otherworldly. \nSustainability matters deeply to me. I work with recycled metals and consciously sourced stones because how something is made is just as important as what it becomes. I want my work to reflect respect—for the craft\, the materials\, and the world we live in. \nEach piece I make is meant to be more than an accessory—it’s a small\, wearable reminder of connection. To beauty\, to place\, and to the intricate details that often go unnoticed.”
