DESCRIPTION:In December\, Art Detectives will search for hidden faces in the negative spaces of letters in a charming book by graphic designer Scott Lambert. We’ll then tour Taekyeom Lee: Designed\, Printed & Fired. Using unusual materials and digital tools like 3D printers\, Taekyeom creates letters\, graphics\, and objects that invite visitors to explore design through touch\, sight\, and play. We’ll finish by making our own typography-inspired artwork.

DESCRIPTION:Created by Vanessa Gould\, the award-winning documentary Between the Folds follows the stories of ten artists and scientists whose work applies the art of origami in unexpected ways. The film examines both traditional and unconventional approaches to origami art\, then explores the work of mathematicians\, scientists\, and educators who use origami as a tool for research and pedagogy. Illuminating the close connections between art and science\, the film celebrates the vast worlds of knowledge and creative expression that can be unlocked starting with a deceptively simple square of paper. Between the Folds was produced by Green Fuse Films and PBS Independent Lens. It has a run time of 56 minutes.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Exploring the KNAS Faculty Review with Director Leslie Donaldson
DESCRIPTION:The Kirk Newman Art School Faculty Review is a much-anticipated biennial exhibition at the KIA\, showcasing the considerable talents of Kirk Newman Art School faculty members who provide world-class instruction in a wide range of media. During this ArtBreak\, KNAS Director Leslie Donaldson will offer remarks on this year’s show\, which centers on the theme of process\, before leading guests on a walkthrough of the exhibition. Please note that this ArtBreak will involve standing and walking. Gallery stools will be available. \nLeslie Donaldson has served as Director of the Kirk Newman Art School since 2023\, bringing to the role more than 20 years’ experience in varied arts management functions\, including education\, programming\, marketing\, fundraising\, strategic planning\, and entrepreneurship. She served as the inaugural CEO of Common Grounds Cooperative\, a nonprofit real-estate cooperative in Traverse City. Her career also includes successful stints as the Director of Engagement for Interlochen Center for the Arts\, the Executive Director for the Arts Council of Greater Lansing\, and the Director of Arts Programs for the City of East Lansing. Donaldson holds an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Painting/Printmaking and a BFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Typography and the Art of Communication
DESCRIPTION:Typography brings form to words both beautiful and mundane. What factors do graphic designers consider as they’re selecting the “clothes” our words will wear? How have changes in technology influenced fonts\, designers\, and the work they make? What effects have these developments had on the philosophy of typography? Join Ryan Lewis for a brief journey through the p’s and q’s of typographic expression. \nRyan Lewis is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Western Michigan University\, where he teaches courses in typography\, bookmaking\, letterpress\, and advanced problem solving. His research interests include stop-motion animation\, type design\, and animated typography. His video work has been exhibited and screened in the US and abroad. Lewis earned an MFA from Ohio University and a BFA from Utah State University.
