DESCRIPTION:During this Gallery Gathering\, we will take a closer look at Charles Henry Alston’s Untitled (Couple)\, said to have been inspired by Langston Hughes’ 1925 poem “The Weary Blues.” An original member of the Abstract Expressionist movement\, Alston was a painter\, muralist\, sculptor\, illustrator\, and educator\, as well as the founder of two major African American art collectives\, 306 and Spiral. Join us to discuss Untitled (Couple) and to learn more about this trailblazing artist of the Harlem Renaissance. \nThis program will be led by artist and arts educator Bianca Washington.

While both early 20th century paintings depict religious scenes\, the artists approached their subject matter in distinctly different ways. Dawson\, credited with being America’s first abstract artist\, employs Cubist techniques\, while Dawson\, considered the first African American artist to attain international acclaim\, blends Realism and Impressionism.

In her series The Real Story of the Superheroes\, Dulce Pinzón centers immigrant workers whose everyday heroism takes the form of quiet sacrifice and courage in the face of often extreme labor conditions.
