Held in conjunction with the exhibition Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks\, this special Free Thursday experience centers creativity\, innovation\, and community connection. \nGuests will enjoy free admission\, live performances by Latinx artists\, a DJ\, free food\, prizes\, and a hands-on art activity. Local Latinx artists will be invited to showcase their work\, and community organizations will be present to share resources and connect with visitors. Nuestro Futuro is designed as a welcoming\, bilingual space for families\, youth\, and first-time visitors to explore the exhibition\, celebrate culture\, and imagine what the future can look like when art and community move forward together. \nFuture Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks is co-organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Bata Shoe Museum\, and curated by Elizabeth Semmelhack\, Director and Senior Curator of the Bata Shoe Museum.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Through a Lens Darkly
DESCRIPTION:The first documentary to explore the role of photography in shaping the identities\, aspirations\, and social emergence of African Americans\, Through a Lens Darkly probes the recesses of American history\, bringing to light images captured by African American photographers that have been suppressed\, forgotten\, and lost. These images reveal a complex and nuanced view of American culture and society and its founding ideals. Inspired by Deborah Willis’s book Reflections in Black and featuring the works of Carrie Mae Weems\, Lorna Simpson\, Anthony Barboza\, Hank Willis Thomas\, Coco Fusco\, Clarissa Sligh and many others\, Through a Lens Darkly introduces the viewer to a diverse yet focused community of storytellers who transform singular experiences into a communal journey of discovery – and a call to action. Directed by Thomas Allen Harris\, the film is distributed by First Run Features and has a run time of ninety minutes.

DESCRIPTION:During this Gallery Gathering\, we will take a closer look at Charles Henry Alston’s Untitled (Couple)\, said to have been inspired by Langston Hughes’ 1925 poem “The Weary Blues.” An original member of the Abstract Expressionist movement\, Alston was a painter\, muralist\, sculptor\, illustrator\, and educator\, as well as the founder of two major African American art collectives\, 306 and Spiral. Join us to discuss Untitled (Couple) and to learn more about this trailblazing artist of the Harlem Renaissance. \nThis program will be led by artist and arts educator Bianca Washington.

DESCRIPTION:Aspiring artist Louisa becomes enchanted by three figures nestled in the corner of a famous painting. Intrigued\, she embarks on a cross-country journey to uncover their story. Twenty-five years earlier\, in a coastal town\, four teenagers–misfits with bruised pasts–bonded over summer days on an abandoned pier\, forging fierce loyalty and creative escape. Their friendship inspired the painting\, and its legacy touches Louisa’s life in unexpected and emotional ways. Please note that the author will not be in attendance for this event.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Exploring the KNAS Faculty Review with Director Leslie Donaldson
DESCRIPTION:The Kirk Newman Art School Faculty Review is a much-anticipated biennial exhibition at the KIA\, showcasing the considerable talents of Kirk Newman Art School faculty members who provide world-class instruction in a wide range of media. During this ArtBreak\, KNAS Director Leslie Donaldson will offer remarks on this year’s show\, which centers on the theme of process\, before leading guests on a walkthrough of the exhibition. Please note that this ArtBreak will involve standing and walking. Gallery stools will be available. \nLeslie Donaldson has served as Director of the Kirk Newman Art School since 2023\, bringing to the role more than 20 years’ experience in varied arts management functions\, including education\, programming\, marketing\, fundraising\, strategic planning\, and entrepreneurship. She served as the inaugural CEO of Common Grounds Cooperative\, a nonprofit real-estate cooperative in Traverse City. Her career also includes successful stints as the Director of Engagement for Interlochen Center for the Arts\, the Executive Director for the Arts Council of Greater Lansing\, and the Director of Arts Programs for the City of East Lansing. Donaldson holds an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Painting/Printmaking and a BFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University.

DESCRIPTION:Created by Vanessa Gould\, the award-winning documentary Between the Folds follows the stories of ten artists and scientists whose work applies the art of origami in unexpected ways. The film examines both traditional and unconventional approaches to origami art\, then explores the work of mathematicians\, scientists\, and educators who use origami as a tool for research and pedagogy. Illuminating the close connections between art and science\, the film celebrates the vast worlds of knowledge and creative expression that can be unlocked starting with a deceptively simple square of paper. Between the Folds was produced by Green Fuse Films and PBS Independent Lens. It has a run time of 56 minutes.

DESCRIPTION:In December\, Art Detectives will search for hidden faces in the negative spaces of letters in a charming book by graphic designer Scott Lambert. We’ll then tour Taekyeom Lee: Designed\, Printed & Fired. Using unusual materials and digital tools like 3D printers\, Taekyeom creates letters\, graphics\, and objects that invite visitors to explore design through touch\, sight\, and play. We’ll finish by making our own typography-inspired artwork.
