DESCRIPTION:Meet a living legend in the world of shoe design! During this Artful Evening\, Wilson W. Smith III will speak about his prolific career in the athletic footwear industry. The first Black designer for Nike\, Smith has created shoes for Michael Jordan\, Andre Agassi\, Serena Williams\, and many more. After a 41-year career with the company\, Smith retired as the Manager of Design Education with Nike’s Blue-Ribbon Studio in 2025. His work has been recognized with a number of prestigious awards\, including Nike’s inaugural Design Achievement Award in 2019. In 2024\, Detroit’s Pensole Lewis College\, the nation’s only design-focused HBCU\, dedicated the Wilson W. Smith III Footwear Design Studio. Join us to learn more about the passion and artistry that have driven Smith’s remarkable career and his life’s work in design and education. \nFollowing his talk\, Smith will be joined by Dr. D’Wayne Edwards for a discussion and Q&A. With a prominent career in the footwear design industry spanning more than 32 years\, Dr. Edwards has worked with L.A. Gear\, Nike\, and Jordan. Inspired by Deborah Willis’s book Reflections in Black and featuring the works of Carrie Mae Weems\, Lorna Simpson\, Anthony Barboza\, Hank Willis Thomas\, Coco Fusco\, Clarissa Sligh and many others\, Through a Lens Darkly introduces the viewer to a diverse yet focused community of storytellers who transform singular experiences into a communal journey of discovery – and a call to action. Directed by Thomas Allen Harris\, the film is distributed by First Run Features and has a run time of ninety minutes.

DESCRIPTION:During this Gallery Gathering\, we will take a closer look at Charles Henry Alston’s Untitled (Couple)\, said to have been inspired by Langston Hughes’ 1925 poem “The Weary Blues.” An original member of the Abstract Expressionist movement\, Alston was a painter\, muralist\, sculptor\, illustrator\, and educator\, as well as the founder of two major African American art collectives\, 306 and Spiral. Twenty-five years earlier\, in a coastal town\, four teenagers–misfits with bruised pasts–bonded over summer days on an abandoned pier\, forging fierce loyalty and creative escape. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Exploring the KNAS Faculty Review with Director Leslie Donaldson
DESCRIPTION:The Kirk Newman Art School Faculty Review is a much-anticipated biennial exhibition at the KIA\, showcasing the considerable talents of Kirk Newman Art School faculty members who provide world-class instruction in a wide range of media. During this ArtBreak\, KNAS Director Leslie Donaldson will offer remarks on this year’s show\, which centers on the theme of process\, before leading guests on a walkthrough of the exhibition. Please note that this ArtBreak will involve standing and walking. Gallery stools will be available. \nLeslie Donaldson has served as Director of the Kirk Newman Art School since 2023\, bringing to the role more than 20 years’ experience in varied arts management functions\, including education\, programming\, marketing\, fundraising\, strategic planning\, and entrepreneurship. She served as the inaugural CEO of Common Grounds Cooperative\, a nonprofit real-estate cooperative in Traverse City. Her career also includes successful stints as the Director of Engagement for Interlochen Center for the Arts\, the Executive Director for the Arts Council of Greater Lansing\, and the Director of Arts Programs for the City of East Lansing. Donaldson holds an MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Painting/Printmaking and a BFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University.

During this Gallery Gathering\, we will discuss select works in this exhibition\, examining Taekyeom’s unique approach and methods. \nThis program will be facilitated by Nate Osborn and Audrey Cooke. Both Osborn and Cooke are artists\, members of Kzoo Makers\, and design engineers at Stryker.
