SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Glass Art
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about glass art with Ekin Deniz Aytac and Joshua Davids! A husband-and-wife team of artists hailing from Edremit\, Turkey\, and Colorado respectively\, Aytac and Davids draw from a unique combination of culture\, heritage\, and experience to develop new works of glass art. They have lived\, traveled\, and created artwork together since 2014. \nAytac began working with glass in Istanbul\, Turkey\, before studying in the Czech Republic and eventually attending the graduate program at West Texas A&M University. Davids discovered glass at the same university while seeking a master’s degree in the fine arts. Both artists fell in love with the glass due to its physical nature and the team aspect of creating with the material\, as well as its capacity to interact with light and space. In 2015\, the couple moved to Kalamazoo to manage Glass Art Kalamazoo\, a nonprofit public access glass studio. There they taught classes\, created events and demonstrations\, and honed their skills in the hot shop before taking their practice independent in 2020. Their work is exhibited in internationally renowned galleries\, museums\, and private collections around the world.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: West Michigan Area Show Artist Highlight
DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, meet local artists Richard Aardsma and Olivia Stier\, whose works are featured in the 2024 West Michigan Area Show! \nRichard Aardsma finds inspiration for his photomontages in the evolution of the photographic still life in modern and postmodern art. Thought-provoking compositions such as Still Life with Camera convey narrative meaning through the juxtaposition of elements. Aardsma seeks to create images that combine traditional aesthetics and conceptual art. \nOlivia Stier is a multimedia artist whose work explores grief\, memory\, and the spaces where the two intersect. Her work in portraiture offers an intimate look into the feelings of isolation\, loneliness\, and detachment that come from grieving. Stier’s print An Offering was selected for this year’s Southwest Michigan Printmakers’ Excellence in Printmaking Award.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Preston Singletary: Echoes\, Fire\, and Shadows
DESCRIPTION:For nearly two decades\, Preston Singletary has straddled two unique cultures\, melding his Tlingit ancestry with the dynamism of the Studio Glass Movement. In the process\, he has created an extraordinarily distinctive and powerful body of work that depicts cultural and historical images in richly detailed\, beautifully hued glass. Singletary has translated the visual vocabulary of patterns\, narratives\, and systems of Native woodcarving and painted art into glass\, a material historically associated with Native peoples through an extensive network of trading routes. \nSave the date for the KIA’s collaboration with Glass Art Kalamazoo on August 10\, as we celebrate Clearly Indigenous with an artists’ exchange\, live demonstrations\, and a family-friendly hands-on exploration of creating glass art! \n\n\n\nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: West Michigan Area Show Artist Highlight
DESCRIPTION:During this ArtBreak\, meet local artists Vicki Nelson and Michael Pfleghaar\, whose paintings are featured in the 2024 West Michigan Area Show! \nVicki Nelson’s painting The Howards was selected for this year’s Art League Award. As an artist\, Nelson is interested in how humans interact with their environments. In her work\, she seeks to examine and reveal her subjects’ interior experiences. \nMichael Pfleghaar also explores human experience in his work\, but he does so through a focus on non-human objects as revelatory artifacts. Works such as Indoor Outdoor seek a delicate balance between realism and abstraction by flattening space\, utilizing mixed media\, and masking. \nStop by our galleries during July Art Hop for the announcement of the People’s Choice Award winner! This award\, sponsored by the Arts Council of Great Kalamazoo\, will be presented during Art Hop on Friday\, July 12\, at 6:00 pm. \n\n\n\nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: West Michigan Area Show Artist Highlight
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist’s talk and live demonstration with Jeffrey Bohl\, whose sculpture Ellie is featured in the 2024 West Michigan Area Show! \nBohl has been creating bronze sculptures for over 16 years\, exhibiting along the way in numerous regional competitions and in several individual shows. He pours most of his bronzes in his own backyard\, using foundry equipment he has designed and built himself. He creates sculptures by assemblage\, first creating various hollow wax forms\, then looking for relationships between those individual shapes and assembling them into compelling larger forms. Bohl tends toward light-hearted figurative work and has been creating animal forms for the last few years. His work is represented by J. Petter Gallery in Saugatuck. \nBe sure to stop by the West Michigan Area Show before June 24 to cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award! The winner of this award\, sponsored by the Arts Council of Great Kalamazoo\, will be announced during Art Hop on Friday\, July 12\, at 6:00 pm. \n\n\n\nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Simon Pokagon’s Birch Bark Stories
DESCRIPTION:Originally published in 1893 and 1901\, Simon Pokagon’s birch bark stories were printed on thinly peeled and elegantly bound birch bark. In Dr. Blaire Morseau’s 2023 book\, As Sacred to Us: Simon Pokagon’s Birch Bark Stories in Their Contexts\, these rare booklets are reprinted with new essays that set the stories in cultural\, linguistic\, historical\, and even geological context. Experts in Native literary traditions\, history\, Algonquian languages\, the Michigan landscape\, and materials conservation illuminate the thousands of years of Indigenous knowledge that Pokagon elevated in his stories. \nBlaire Morseau is a citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians\, a beadwork artist\, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies as well as affiliate faculty in American Indian and Indigenous Studies at Michigan State University. Before joining MSU\, she was Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston\, where she served as Interim Director of Native American and Indigenous Studies. Dr. Morseau also worked as her tribe’s first Archivist\, where she launched the online collections website\, Wiwkwébthëgen. \n\n\n\nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Maya Lin: A Strong\, Clear Vision
DESCRIPTION:Join us in observing Memorial Day with a screening of the 1994 film Maya Lin: A Strong\, Clear Vision. This Academy Award-winning documentary tells the story of architect-sculptor Maya Lin\, whose design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was selected from over a thousand submissions when she was a 21-year-old student at Yale University. The film explores the controversy that arose surrounding the design of the monument as well as its creator herself\, a young\, Chinese-American woman who stood her ground in the face of widespread criticism. Dedicated on Veteran’s Day in 1982\, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has become one of the world’s most-visited memorials.  \nMaya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision was written and directed by Frieda Lee Mock and produced by Frieda Lee Mock and Terry Sanders. The runtime of this film is 83 minutes. \n\n\n\nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Upjohn’s Building 88
DESCRIPTION:In 1961\, construction was completed on two remarkable structures in Kalamazoo\, both designed by the architectural firm Skidmore\, Owings & Merrill. One was the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts\, based on a design by architect Mies van der Rohe and expanded in 1994 to become the structure we occupy today. The other was the Upjohn Company’s Building 88\, designed by Bruce Graham and razed in 2007. \nDuring this ArtBreak talk\, learn more about the innovative design elements that made Building 88 unique with Dr. Christine Hahn\, Professor of Art History at Kalamazoo College. Dr. Hahn argues that Building 88 represents one of the country’s earliest examples of the open office movement. In both its interior and exterior design\, Building 88 blurred the lines between work and home\, marrying together notions of modern domesticity with the new executive workplace. \n\n\n\nAll hybrid events will be livestreamed to our YouTube page and can be found under the “Live” tab. Recordings of select past events are available on YouTube as well. No registration is necessary in order to join in virtually.

SUMMARY:ArtBreak: Pilchuck: A Dance with Fire
DESCRIPTION:Founded by Dale Chihuly and a few art school friends in 1971\, the Pilchuck Glass School has long been pushing the limits of a medium that can last for centuries or shatter in an instant. Through the story of this small and highly influential school in the Pacific Northwest\, Pilchuck: A Dance with Fire identifies the remarkable convergence of visionary individuals\, regional cultures\, and fortunate timing to explain how and why Pilchuck and the studio glass movement has blossomed. The story of the people and events that mark the past 43 years of Pilchuck history is told through firsthand accounts of the individuals who shaped the school and helped create its remarkable evolution from a makeshift summer workshop to a vital international center for artists working in glass. Narrated by Jeff Bridges\, the film includes interviews with Pilchuck founder Dale Chihuly and Preston Singletary\, whose glass works are included in Clearly Indigenous.  \nPilchuck: A Dance with Fire was written by Gary Gibson and directed and produced by John Forsen\, and it is shared with many thanks to Fidget Films. The film has a runtime of 59 minutes.
