DESCRIPTION:Sourced from the ‘Zoo opens to the public in conjunction with Art Hop on Friday\, March 7 from 5–8pm.  \nSourced from the ‘Zoo is a community-wide exhibition celebrating the vibrancy and diversity of Kalamazoo and its residents. This dynamic\, crowdsourced exhibition is a platform for everyone in Kalamazoo to participate\, creating a shared space for commemoration\, celebration\, and meaningful connections. The exhibition will be on view at the KIA through Sunday\, June 1\, 2025. \nAbout Sourced from the ‘Zoo: This exciting crowdsourced exhibition was designed to foster a deeper sense of belonging and communal connection and invites participants to commemorate and celebrate their unique stories within a shared space. The exhibition features ten themes: Books\, Literature\, and Literacy; Climate and the Environment; The Curious and Unconventional; Dance and Movement; Equity and Social Justice; Glass and Glass-making; Life in Kalamazoo after the Pandemic; Music and Musical Instruments; People and Places in Kalamazoo; and Self-care and Well-being. These themes represent the diverse passions and experiences that make Kalamazoo such a rich and dynamic place to live.  \nIn addition to the KIA\, submissions from the community will be featured at other venues\, including the KVCC Center for New Media [on view March 6-April 25\, 2025]\, Black Arts and Cultural Center [on view April 2025]\, Glass Art Kalamazoo [on view March 6-April 21]\, and Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo [on view March 7-April 25\, 2025]. Sourced from the ‘Zoo will also feature programmatic partners including the Kalamazoo Valley Museum\, Kalamazoo Public Library (Central)\, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra\, and Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers\, among other community collaborations.

SUMMARY:Kirk Newman Art School Hands On Event
DESCRIPTION:Thinking of taking a class at the KIA? “Make it and take it all in one night” and join us for the School’s Hands On event as it returns during Art Hop on Friday\, March 7 from 6 to 9pm! This fun\, fast-paced art making evening features a range of activities and creative projects highlighting different media students can experience in the Kirk Newman Art School. \nBring your friends and family to create a ceramic cup or raku fired vessel\, hand print a tea towel\, weld a metal garden art piece\, produce a photogram\, and more. 15 different projects will be available to enjoy. Admission to the event and some projects are free while others require nominal tickets to cover the costs of materials. Tickets for projects can be purchased at the door (1 ticket = $1) and projects range from $2-$30. \nProjects include: \n\nIndigo dyed tote bags\, dumpling bags\, scrunchies\, and bandanas\nWeaving and spinning demonstrations\nPhotograms on postcard paper\nMoon portraits in our digital lab\nMetal jewelry wrap rings\nMetal magic wands and keychains\nPrintmaking on fabric tea towels\nHandprinted linoleum block greeting cards\nWelded metal garden stakes and wall art\nGlaze and raku fire a premade ceramic vases\nMake a mug! Ceramic cup handbuilding in clay\n15 minute wheel throwing mini lesson in clay\n15 minute drawing mini lesson in your own keepsake sketchbook\nBullet journaling demos and worksheets\nMini abstract painting on canvas\nChildren’s puppetry making project\n\nRegister for the event below!
