West Shore Community College Professor Emerita Sharon Bluhm first learned about Manierre Dawson when she and her husband began restoring a home near Ludington, MI once owned by the Dawson family. Dawson (1887-1969) was the first artist in America to move deliberately from representational painting towards complete abstraction.

Bluhm's research led to an award-winning book, Manierre Dawson, Inventions of the Mind, that incorporates journal entries, photographs of family and art to create an intimate glimpse into the life and mind of this remarkable man and pioneering artist.
