ART League: Last Day of Pompeii

The Last Day of Pompeii is a large history painting by Karl Briullov produced in 1830-33 about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E. It was received to near universal acclaim at the 1834 Paris Salon exhibition and made Briullov the first Russian painter to have an international reputation. Margaret Samu, PhD, is an art historian who teaches at The New School's Parsons School of Design and lectures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She works on 18th and 19th Century European and American Art, with a special interest in the intersection between Russian and Western cultures.
