Up Close: Helen Frankenthaler's Blues

Frankenthaler's Blues Title
Thursday, October 11 & 18; 6:30-7:45 p.m.

The KIA's Code Blue is a stunning example of painter Helen Frankenthaler's expressive exploration of the title's color. Incorporating cloud-like stains and thick, gestural streaks, the shifting moods of the painting range from expansive and serene to agitated and ominous.

This two-part class explores the special significance the color blue held for Frankenthaler throughout her career. In addition to discussing the techniques and color composition of Code Blue, the class will also highlight several examples of Frankenthaler's graphic work in the KIA collection. These show her use of blues to create a wide range of pictorial effects in ways that set her apart from other abstract painters of the time.

There will also be an opportunity for each participant to explore his or her own responses to blue, by creating a small collage based on that color.
