Prerequisite: Participants should have a working knowledge of Photoshop software and traditional photography.
Scannography is a new form of photography rooted in the earliest cameraless images made by photographic pioneers Henry Fox Talbot and Anna Atkins. Kim Kauffman has been working with scannography since 1998, taking the technique beyond basic scans to create compelling images by combining scanning and photo-collage.
In this workshop Kim will demonstrate her technique for building a photo-collage and show samples of her work as well as other scannographers. She will address the basics of making a good scan, image resolution and sizing, the importance of color management and working with ICC profiles. Kim will guide participants through the basics of using a flatbed scanner as the capture device for recording 3-dimensional objects. From a series of scans made during the workshop, participants will learn techniques for combining the scans to create unique images working with Adobe Photoshop software. Participants will be asked to arrive with objects and ideas based in their own interests. Kauffman will provide individual input to help participants realize their ideas.
Scanning and photo-collage offer photographers exiting techniques that draw upon their skills as camera/lens based photographers but allows them to develop their vision in a new way. Kim's website is www.synecdochestudio.com/
