The Fine Art of Volunteering

Volunteers provide support for all programs and services at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts

More than 400 volunteers provide 8,000 hours of service annually to the KIA. Volunteers are rewarded with the enjoyment and satisfaction of extending the Art Institute's programs and services to the people of West Michigan.

Your interests and skills can be valuable to the KIA in a number of areas.

  • Reception Desk
These volunteers give directions, answer visitor questions and provide information about the programs, events and activities of the KIA.

  • Development
Development volunteers are involved in activities that help secure funding needed for support of various KIA programs. Activities include assisting with mailings, fundraising, membership and sales.

  • Marketing and Public Relations
These volunteers help promote the KIA (museum and school) through various marketing and PR projects.

  • Special Events
Committees of volunteers organize and run such events as the Art Fair, Art and Antique Auction, KIA School Holiday Sale and the Hands-On Festival. Tasks for these projects are varied everything from selling popcorn or balloons to running a silent auction.

  • Hospitality
Hospitality volunteers plan and host receptions for exhibition openings, Gallery Hops and various KIA social functions. Inventorying reception supplies, setting up and decorating reception areas, serving food and beverages, and clean-up are all part of the Hospitality Committee's function.

  • Docents
Docents are trained guides who conduct tours for museum visitors. Volunteers in this area complete a special training course and commit to leading regularly scheduled tours. Interactive Gallery Docents assist visitors of all ages at the various learning stations in the ARTworks Interactive Gallery.

  • Outreach Services
Volunteers make educational presentations in the ARTS program, deliver works of art to sponsors in the Corporate Art program, and assist in ARTREACH, which provides small traveling exhibitions of original art works to locations throughout West Michigan.

  • Exhibition Support
These volunteers are intimately involved with the art work shown at the KIA. They assist with both art registration and art preparation.

  • Gallery Shop
Gallery Shop volunteers assist in all aspects of retail operation. Customer service, store merchandising and cleaning, and receiving and pricing new merchandise are some of the duties for this corps of highly visible volunteers.

  • Library
These volunteers assist with cataloging, filing and circulation of library materials.
